Multi evaporators on one condenser (mini split)

Ok, I am worried this will get lost in another thread.

I am putting a mini split in a "Bonus room", but, I am seriously considering putting a second coil in the garage.

My question is on energy.

I know the compressors are DC, multi speed, and magic. My question is about the magic.

When I am only running one coil will the amp draw go down sufficiently? I am worried running more compressor (read $$$$$$$) than I need, since I don't intend on using the garage coil very often.

I was talking to two different HVAC guys and they were talking about using up to three coils on one condenser.

The dual, tri and quad units are not as efficient as the singles. For instance, I am putting in a dual 24 w2-12's in my daughters house this week. It is 16.5 seer. I did the upstairs in my home with the same unit, but rarely run it. In the downstairs I put a 25seer single 12 with 12hspf (heating seasonal performance factor). In your case, I'd go with the new 28 seer in the primary living space and go with a less expensive unit for the garage. Btw, they are making units now that are 4ton (48kbtu) and you can run up to 8 evaps with a total of from 38-64kbtu worth of evap. The numbers I've given are for Fujitsu's, but their numbers are typically the highest in the industry.

To give you a simple answer....
Your not gonna use more energy than you need with a DC inverter unit. That is the purpose of it.

The other thing worth asking is what does the larger unit draw just sitting in an idle state. I have a 24K BTU Fujitsu single zone and it draws 270 watts when it's off. I thought it might be a heating circuit, however we've had temps over 70F already and it's still pulling that constant 270 watts (translation, no magic, $1/day to do nothing). Having two units on two circuits means you can shut off the garage unit completely and avoid a parasitic loss, but I don't know if the smaller units will draw any less than one larger unit.

270 watt phantom load is HUGE. Call the manufacturer, there must be a short. A single cfl light bulb is 13 watts. 20 cfls in one spot is like the sun.

Daikin makes systems much larger than this, we just intstalled a 50 ton system with 38 evaps!

Absolutely! So do Mitsubishi, Sanyo (now Panasonic) and Fujitsu. Samsung and others do too! Sounds like a pretty cool system. How's it running?
