multi meter case....

just picked up a big boy meter lol...my cheapy craftsman took a dump, and my buddy sold me his old one, its a blue point MT586B, i'm not sure what the fluke equivalent is exactly, but the size is like an 87-88. features wise i havent done the research. it does more than i'll ever use. its been taken care of, new leads, calibrated last year etc.
i would like it to have its own case, not against doing some foam work, but not a fan of the soft cases. im thinking pistol case?
any ideas out there?

You can get a Pelican case with the foam inserts. I use those for pretty much everything (hand tools, sound equipment, etc.)

I have 6 or 7 of the cheap HF ones scattered around so I don't use my 2 good ones very often.
As far as cases go, I use pouches since they are kept in my toolbox
I don't think a hard case is needed unless you go out in the field to use it.
Pistol case is a good idea or hit up some second hand stores. Maybe you will get lucky. As a last resort, google is your friend

I have a nice Fluke automotive meter, use a mini camcorder case, works awesome, has 1 compartment with a protective hard shell that I keep the meter in. There is another softer compartment on the other side that I store extra leads, adapters, alligator clips, etc. in. I think it's a Canon. I actually had the OEM Fluke hard case, couldn't stand it, it was about 8 times bigger than the meter, what a waste of space.

I like that wooden setup, but way beyond my woodworking abilities, and I don't have any cigar boxes big enough.
Also I forgot to mention I didn't want to spend more than I did for the meter lol.
I believe the meter itself is sourced from fluke. Its no longer available as a blue point. I'm Thinking 87.
Thinking about a hanging rack on locker door for leads, maybe not till I leave current shop as idiots will smash them in the door, hence the paranoia of not having a case for the meter. I can see something getting thrown on top of it, or,oh god, they might try to use it. Maybe a locking case...I need to buy some extra fuses.

I use a Milwaukee soft case for my meter and power probe. It's the one that my M12 ratchet came with.

It's got a nice pouch in the lid as well for your t-pins, alligator leads, etc.

i was eyeballing the soft case my snap on 14.4 stuff came in, but i do occasionally use it for it intended porpuse, hence why its still taking up space on my locker. i do have a couple blow mold cases i could cut the guts out of i guess, then just find foam to cut to size?

I just bought a used MT586 myself. Didn't really want the meter, but it came with an amp clamp and a bunch of Fluke test leads and accessories I wanted and was only $40
Meter works well, is accurate, and pretty capable...

I use a mens shaving bag to put my multimeters in. Its nice cause its soft and has multi compartments on it to store other meters as well.

You should be able to find a great meter case at an Army-Navy store or military swap meet. These would be the soft cases that a solder carried on his belt. I think that the quality is unbeatable and you can get them very cheap, especially compared to OEM meter cases.

Klein makes a couple different sized cases. I have a medium sized one for mine. Got it from Amazon. It works really well. I can fit my leads in there with it.

Not the best picture of it. But it's a fairly hard case.

LOL, I put my $300 Fluke in a $10 softcase. I can understand wanting to protect you're investment though.

This isn't something you use professionally? Alot of the recommended cases are very bulky and take up alot of space, and wouldn't fit into a tool bag or tool chest. If space not a problem, get a Pelican with the foam. Don't a buy and oversized case with no padding, I.E. the ammo box, as the meter will bounce around inside, defeating the purpose of putting it in one.

That's a nice craftsman's solution, lilredex! Nicely executed, especially the splined joints.

My Flukes are in their soft cases, but then inside a simple 18" plastic toolbox along with leads, clips, jumpers, and 95% of all my basic electrical tools. That way, 1) all my electrical stuff is in one place if I need to go help a friend, 2) they're protected (except from water (no seal), but you could use a sealing box), and 3) I can keep that box in the house (extra security, and protect from extreme hot and cold in the garage.

What is really funny is that I have 4 of those boxes sitting on the bed empty in a spare room. Then I have 6 DMM in a cardboard box. Until he asked the question I never thought about putting them together.


Anyone near a Menard's this is an even better deal on a larger storage box. I have several of these cases for holding tools and saw blades.

I swung by my local Meards and picked up 2 of these guys yesterday.

It took some searching, if you go to the Wixom, MI store, I suggest you go to customer service first with the printed item. It seems they moved this item around and it is now 'upstairs' but once was in the garden department. ?!!?

I have a Fluke soft case I used before I retired from the proving ground, where I spent about 25% of my time in the shop. So, it served me well but it also was in a much larger hard cover case with my other pieces of test equipment.

Anyway, these little hard cases are a terrific and a bargain at ~$4.00. There's just enough room for the test leads and the small T-pins used for back-probing of sealed connectors. Note: I never compromise/pierce the insulation or seals. The fit is good, but I'll put some thin foam on the bottom and lid to keep the meter from moving around.

On the other hand, I could also use the soft case and hard case, for a snug and secure fit. Sort of belt and suspenders answer.
