Recently picked up the M18 multi tool for a sanding job. It works great and is perfect for what I’m doing. I am having a problem with the sanding backing plates. Does anyone make one that’s even half way decent? The Milwaukee lasted maybe 10 hours before the Velcro was shot and wouldn’t hold a piece of sandpaper. The Craftsman lasted maybe 7-8 hours and when I went to change the paper the Velcro backing pulled off the plate. Currently letting the super glue dry to see if that will hold it on. The Drexel has the best Velcro by far but is way smaller. So the commonly available sandpaper hangs over the edge by quite a bit.

Milwaukee on the left, Craftsman in the middle, Drexel on the tool. Second picture shows how much smaller it is.

I have a Makita multitool. I used it for sanding once and it was terrible. Slower than if I did it by hand.

A real sander is not expensive, and will work much better.

When I worked in a body shop we used an adhesive in a spray can. I don't remember what it was but it worked better than anything that came on the paper. Just a light spray across the back of the paper on each new sheet.

I just bought a two pack of sanding pads at Menards. Powermix or something brand. Seem pretty good so far. Even came with the c clip adapter for my Dremel multimax oscillating tool. I think $9.98 for two pack.

First time using my oscillating tool for sanding. Works good. I suggest you buy hook and loop large round sanding discs and cutting to the pad size. I just sanded down two teak rocking chairs for refinishing. Truly a horrible job but the oscillating tool worked well.

that comment about the spray-on adhesive makes a lot of sense.
I had a Fein MultiMaster with a bunch of the rubber profiles for sanding. You would wrap the sandpaper around the profile and use a clamp that held the edges of the paper tight.
Problem was that the rubber got really hot because of friction between it and the sandpaper. And the sanding result was just so-so.
Adhesive Gluestick or spray adhesive would have been a good thing to try.

I use a mouse sander for those jobs, and I’ve used it a lot with no issues. I have a oscillating tool too, but sanding is okay but not a strong point.

Interesting. I use the hell of Hook it style paper on DA's and multitools daily and have no issues like you are seeing. I get good mileage out of most of my backing plates/pads. Are you running the max speed or something? Quality of paper can also have an affect on this as well.

Actually running the lowest speed.

how hot is the pad getting? Melting can be a problem with hook and loop pads if you build up to much heat
