Multimeter question

I have a craftsman multimeter that I got for a few years ago. It is autoranging and has the temp thing on it. I loaned it to my brother and now tonight I needed it. I am using it on (AC/V) and before I loaned it to my brother it would read 120 in a outlet. Now I am only getting like .8 on an outlet that I know has 120 on.

Now for my question.

What did he do? How do I fix it? I took it apart and looked at the fuse, it was burnt so I replaced it with the same result. Is there more than one fuse in there?

Any idea what he was trying to test?

Is it digital (easier to damage)? Was he discharging capacitors..Lol? Are you sure its not on amps?

I took it farther apart last night and found another fuse. It smells burnt so I am going to replace that and see where that gets me.

I replaced the fuses and it is still messed up.....the only thing that is working right is the ohms! GRRRRR now time to buy another multimeter.

Are you sure the leads are plugged into the correct jack?
Some of their meters use separate jacks for ohms and volts. This could be why you can still read ohms, the red lead is just plugged into the wrong jack to read volts.


Weak battery can also cause misreadings, but not to the degree you're seeing. One time I was reading just around a100v ac on a 120v circuit. Fresh battery in meter changed that to 121v.

It's a digital and everything is plugged in right. Used a buddies meter to check out the "new" fuses and batteries. Everything is ok in that department.

Sears has them on sale this week, model 82400... reg 30, 20 for the cc members. free thermocouple included too. Just a heads up.

I was going to buy one from Sears, but they were sold out of the one with the thermocouple, and it will be over a month according to the person I talked to before they get them back in. So I called the company that made it. Wasn't happy when after talking to five different people still couldn't get someone who spoke english. So I went to the parts store and bought another brand.

It wasn't fluke, the number is 1800 921 9100. Maybe you can understand what name they are saying.
