In my research for a/c options, my budget and use has pointed toward window a/c units. I have a 30x50 building with 12' wall heights and 16' at the peak. I have it insulated with 3/4" foam board insulation with radiant barrier on the roof and walls. My plan is to install two 24000 btu window units. My thought is that during the milder parts of the year I can run 1 unit and in the the heat of the summer run both, thinking this would be best for controlling humidity. I am located in North Florida, and primarily use the shop in the evenings after work and the weekends. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

More insulation would help you a lot. 3/4" foam is only around R5. R50 in the ceiling would be so much better.

I could be wrong on this, but I think "size wise" two 24,000 BTU units will handle the space OK if the building is properly insulated. But I have my doubts the entire area will be cool because I don't think the two units will be able to circulate the air enough to keep the whole building cool. You may need to use fans to help blow the cool air around. Should that be the case, it isn't all bad, but I am not sure you would want several fans running in addition to the two large air-conditioners.
I agree with fans being needed. I havent decided whether some ceiling fans would be best or some type of oscillating fans would work better. I was wondering if I should try to keep the temperature layered and not pull hot air down. My hope would be to keep the temp around 80 with lower humdity.
I have a 30x50 with 10' eves and 15" peak heated and cooled in Ms. I also have 2-24000 wall ac. I have foil bubble wrap walls and roof- I know not the best insulation but it does help. When it is 100* outside it will stay about 78-80 inside on the hottest part of the day. It does take out the humidity making it more comfortable. I mounted them at the top of the wall to keep them out of most of the dust. I have ceiling cans but only run them in the winter to bring down the heat.They would bring down the heat as well in the summer. I have 18" fans, I use on the floor where the air is cooler,for the summer when needed. I bought some 1" foam to put in the ceiling, but have not installed it yet. Hope to get it up this winter.

Thanks Deltarat. I am glad to find someone with a similiar setup. I think I am going to move ahead with the a/c units. I have two windows that will work out well and think I am just going to remove the lower sash completely and build some type of frame work to mount the a/c in and make it weather tight and more secure.
