What is the best/most appropriate/legal method of disposing of two gallons of muriatic acid? Used for rust removal from old calipers and need to dispose of both the acid and the soda water used to detox the parts.

Thanks,

Save it until your next hazardous waste collection day.

Over dose it with baking soda until ph neutral (7) or find someplace that takes household waste like your local transfer station. It would help if we knew where you lived.

Mix the acid and the diluting soda water for starters. They will offset each other to some degree.

overkill unless this is free then by all means , especially if the transporting hassle is worth it

pretty harmless stuff when neutralised so I agree. Nothing in there that is not in household bleach , water and limestone ( assuming ths Soda water mentioned is Calcium carbonate if I am remembering what you US guys call "soda" ???) ... oh also sodium as in table salt if you of course neutralise with baking soda...
Iron from the metal parts.. found naturally too.
Use baking soda to neutralize it.
yep, if not already so from the alkaline CaCO3
Dilution is the solution.
I guess also yep , eventually...

Unless we are talking gigagallons I would then pour it (neutralised ) somewhere on my garden :dunno:

Just remember if neutralizing it with soda or even water, add the acid to the soda or water and not the other way around.

Very good point ! I would also wear PP items esp the eyes if we are talking full strength chemicals eg undiluted HCl. Usually I just get the wife to handle this stuff , she is like Chuck Norris, the chemicals neutralise themselves :lol_hitti

oops... how do I edit this post , I think I can feel her footsteps coming down the hall... :bitchslap

Find someone with a pool, I use it a few times a season to help kill bacteria and adjust PH

If it is clean muriatic acid, give it to someone with a pool. I have to add about 24 oz every week to keep my pool water balanced.

Baking soda is a powder. Feel free to pour it directly on the acid. The issue with adding water on top of acid is different. Just remember that it will foam violently.

And turn your pool a nice rusty brown. Did you notice the part about this NOT being pure muriatic acid?
