muric acid for etching

It was suggested to me to use muric acid to prep the floor for the epxoyshield (Rustoleum) is this a good idea??? diluted 6:1

I think that's one of the main things it's used for. It's also a great parts cleaner. I have a plastic 55 gallon drum full of it diluted with water. Drop a rusty part in it and let it hang with a wire for a day or so and it comes out almost spotless bare clean metal. Give it a very good rinse with lots of water afterwards and prime right away or it'll start to rust almost immediately

I believe it is Muriatic Acid and yes it is OK to use. You will need to rinse it with lots of water afterwards and maybe put a line of baking soda to keep it from getting anywhere you don't want it to etch. The soda neutralizes it.

ummm... go to thier website and check out the installation instructions. It says very specifically, do not use muriatic acid for prep.

One could eat off a floor that has been acid washed and neutralized with baking soda.

If you have any problems with that, how can you explain a WB floor with two coats of urethane lasting 16 years in a garage?

Hey, I'm not a chemicals pro, but it's usually a good idea to follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. I just happen to be on the Rustoleum website reading the instructions for that exact product, and they said very specifically to NOT use muriatic acid.

The epoxy sheild kit contains a concentrated cleaner already. I'm guessing they don't want you mixing thier cleaner with muruatic acid. Plus muriatic acid isn't the best thing to rinse into the sewers.

The kit I'm going to use does not have the ecthing inside... it is the industrial professional version NOT the water based ... it only contains the epoxy and color chips not even a DVD

My bad... in Canada the solvent based stuff isn't available. All we get is the water based kit - not sure why? So, I went over to the US website and they actually recommend using muriatic acid (the pro kit doesn't include an cleaner/etcher).
