I received this old portable drill in a large lot I picked up recently. In an old thread in the "Vise company manufacturers directory pre 1970's"
HERE there are some photos of one as well as the identical one that was manufactured in the USA named Cole. Since I only have the drill portion and no vise parts I thought I'd start a new thread. I'm not sure who was first, Murray Canada or Cole USA. Whichever, this could have been the 1st mag drill if it had a magnetic base instead of the clamp system.

Failing that, this could be the 1st keyless chuck!

It seems to be missing something. I'd expect the drill to move downward when cranking the handle but the chuck just rotates. The large nut needs to turn as well so it moves downward. I think it must be missing an interlock pin or something. There is that little arc tab sticking up just to the right and down from the threads and the nut itself has a hole drilled through it vertically but I really don't know how it is supposed to work. (photo #3 below)

I could not get the chuck off, nor the spindle. A manual would be great but no luck with that so far. I'd love to get functional but I've got bigger fish to fry at the moment so I've wire wheeled and BLO'd it and here it sits in it's traveling position until I find more time to mess with it again.

On this little fellow, the Allen head bolt needs to tighten to force the auto advance. When its loose, it just spins at a fixed level. I would look for something similar. Do you need to engage the nut with the threaded section to get it to drive downward?

I think you nailed it RTM. We have the spindle attached to the crank inside the sleeve which is housed in the body (word CANADA on it). In the last photo just above the chuck you can see a bolt sticking out. It would lock the sleeve to the spindle. The big nut at the top is part of the sleeve, they are one.

Anyway I had that locking bolt right out so what I think is wrong is the sleeve is locked to the spindle there from damage from tightening the bolt too much or from the bolt being loose from the flat spot on the spindle where it aligns, thus the spindle got chewed up and is bound. I could only move the crank backwards which causes the ratchet spur to freewheel and nothing else happens. I'll go to work at freeing the spindle from the sleeve. Might be a while but I'll update this thread. Thanks for your help!

Missed that, glad you were able to make the jump from mine to yours.

Th excitement will be you need to pull it apart twice, once from the Canada piece, and then inner shaft from sleeve. Don’t lose your leverage as you do so.
