Hey all you old timers with all the knowledge. Wanted to sign on for a little info. I have a 1956 Studebaker Golden Hawk with a mild 302 Ford with C4. Somebody put in a front clip from something. Looks like a stock non power rack and pinion setup. My problem is I want to go power and have no idea what kind of front end this is. It appears to be older, and we don't have many salvage yards around here to look at different models. Any advice on visual id whether Ford, GM, or maybe even Mopar?

If you post a few pictures we will figure it out for you. I have an M2 rack on my 38 Ford panel. If it's an M2 rack and is not power you can install a power M2 rack. You have to install a PS pump but it can be done.

Well, I'm not a purist, but I do like racks of all kinds. I didn't know of another name to call it. Going back to when all American vehicles had the old Pitman arms the only name I knew was rack and pinion from the British sports cars. What should I call them now?
Good idea, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I haven't had much reason to look up casting numbers until recently. The only thing I've had to look up was the casting number on the 302, but it wasn't where it was supposed to be, but I think that's a good clue in itself ('80 to 81').Welcome and post some pics of your ride. I've been looking over all the stuff to do it with, but I don't want to get anything yet until I verify the "cylinder" or whatever I'm suppose to call it. Mounts are the toughest part since I don't have the AC pump for belt tension adjustment.
