muti position lamp switch help

Guys we have 3 lamps here that have some sort of electrical issue. All of them have an issue in the rotary type switch inline with the cord. They all have like a 4 position switch that adjust the brightness in 3 levels plus the off position. The switches all spark, get hot, smell and generally scare me. I thought maybe the bulb wattage was to hi so I dropped all bulbs from the 40w to 25w and still no dice.

At this point I would like to just replace the whole cord and socket but I can't seem to find any of those multi position switches in line with the cords...can someone please point me in the right direction or shed some light on what to do for a fix? This is one of those projects that was started 6 months ago and I'm finally tired of hearing about it.

Sounds like a resistance dimmer. I'd just put a regular "on/off" switch on it if the existing dimmers worry you.

Check Ebay number 351169417180 ,for use with incandescent lighting only.

or you can install a touch dimmer in the lamp base.(metal base)

Are you sure that the switch isn't designed for a 3-way lamp? That's a lamp that gives off 3 different brightness levels, usually 50-100-150 watts. Try one of those.
