IT WORKS!!!

Got this from a guy off craigslist, he said his dad had it in a shed about the size of a single axle dumptruck..lol so its not been run hard, took the bottom off and blew out the combustion chambers and clean it real good, then I had to winch it up with 3 cargo straps, due to not having any help,
IMG_0256.jpg

once I got it up there I got some all thread and nuts and hung it up
IMG_0261.jpg

then had to get an adapter to go from 5 inch to 6 inch cause 5 inch type b pipeing is hard to find around here, everyone has gone to even sizes.
IMG_0263.jpg

Then I wasn't really happy with it hanging from the 2x4 , so I went to lowes and got a 6 foot section of L channel, 12 gauge, cut it in half and welded it to make a C channel, then transfered it over to that, wasn't fun...
IMG_0272.jpg

IMG_0275.jpg

got some more nuts and wahsers also and sandwiched the allthread to cut down on some of the rocking of the unit,
IMG_0276.jpg

IMG_0274.jpg

it killed me to cut a big hole in the roof..lol
IMG_0277.jpg

and I installed the section of pipe and flashing and added the cap, turned out pretty good.
IMG_0278.jpg

called the gas company to see how much to move my 100 gallon tank over to the garage, and hook up to the unit, guy said almost 500 bucks, I about crapped myself, so I went to lowes and got some black iron pipe and made the lines myself..
for about 20 bucks for the pipe and fittings and 25 for the flex hook up pipe.

Now I just need em to come out, test it and hook up the tank to the lines.

What are the clearance specs to combustible materials?
Can it really be hung that close to the wood?

6 at the top. 18 inches on the sides... and the vent pipe is a type b double wall pipe with a inch or more around where it goes through the roof.the hole is just cut funky, and I gave myself 19 inches from the side to offset when i add the drywall later.

Three things. You did a nice neat installation. Great idea using the straps to lift the unit. You got a Great Deal on the unit...I would give you a U -**** award.

Looks like you went to alot of trouble to weld up that L material into a channel, when a walk around to the electrical section of Lowes would have got you some Unistrut, much easier.

The 2x4 and using the existing brackets on top of the unit would have sufficed.

Check all of the connections with bubbly and fire that thing up.

well the uni strut only came in 10 ft sections at my lowes and I only had my crown vic to haul it home, plus I really didn't need 10 ft.lol ,but it wasn't that much trouble, , just took my cut off wheel , ziped it in two and clamped and welded , maybe 5 min tops.

Nice looking install! I noticed you used the term "Tank," you must be burning LP. Check to make sure the unit is setup for that rather than natural gas. If not already converted, it's not too tough to do. If you can handle an install like that, you should have no trouble converting it. Just check with your local gas company or HVAC contractor for a kit.
BTW, why don't you hook it up yourself?

Well I want to use a 100 gal tank I already have, but its about 75-100 feet away from the garage , and its 80% full so its quite heavy , but , the gas company I have now has pissed me off not returning my call 2 days after he said he would so I'm looking to have amerigas come out and give me a quote to set me up and then I'll tell my other company to shove it.and yes the unit is converted for lp.made sure of that before I bought it.

Well the 2x4 was little too close to the vent pipe for my liking, plus I'm always looking for an excuse to weld..lol , When i built my pipes , I closed the valve on the top , and made a rig to apply air pressure to the pipeings , filled it to 80 PSI and checked with soapy water for leaks, found 0 so i installed it on the wall.

yea I got about $215-220 on the install with the heater included, the gas company wanted $475 to come out and run some halfass 1/2 soft copper line and connect it and thats not including the exhaust,so I saved a bundle. The ceiling and insulation is next on the list, figured its gonna be 210-230 to get the sheetrock, and hopefully my brother in law can help me install it and I'll prolly use blown in up top and finish the batts on the walls.

Check and see if your local code will allow other coverings besides sheetrock. There are a number of threads here on alternatives.

I personally want sheetrock. Good news, I thought my neighbor had a 3 point boom that goes on the back of his tractor.so I went over and checked today and he did , so I hooked it up and brought his tractor over and i had a spare aircraft tiedown chain so I used that and lifted the tank from behind my house and plced it behind the garage, and went and got a roll of soft copper and flared it myself and made the hookup from the tank to my stub outside and finished connecting the flex line to the heater , closed the valve inside and tuned on the gas for another leak check, it was all good so I turned on the valve, turned on the power and fired it up...works perfect..I'm stoked..lol I really didn't want to give this tank back to the company with 75% in it so I'm gonna use all that , then get another gas company. The one I have has put off calling me back for 2 days before today ,figure they didn't work today so I won't hold em to today so I'm getting gas from somewhere else.

Moving that tank was great work! Not even calling back is very bad.

Check out some of those alternative threads anyway, you might find some good ideas.:)

Also think about a french cleat all around the garage to hold pegboard panels, racks, shelves, cabinets, etc. That way they can be easily moved around and modified.

Whenever a propane company sets a tank, they are required by law to check the connections by pressure testing them. They are ultimately responsible for any leaks in the plumbing at the time of installation. If you change companies, they will charge you a set up fee and check all the connections again. If the driver comes to your home to refill the tank, and realizes that it has been moved, he most likely will not refill it, until the service department checks out the installation. They are protecting themselves and you as a customer.

Most plumbers can hook up the gas line for you. My friend who is a master plumber helped me run 100 feet of gas line from the basement to my Hot Dawg heater in the garage

Check your building codes BEFORE the gas co. sends someone out! I dont know about where you are, but here you CANNOT have ANY type of gas fitting INSIDE a wall space. I think all of your couplings and 90's/ unions will need to be outside your stud space!
If local code is the same as here, he wont be able to hook you up any way.

well the current company will not be refilling the tank,, and if the next one wants to check it , thats perfectly fine , and if nessicary i can slide the whole pipe , outside the studs.

the lp companies around me will set the tank (if leasing the tank from them) and pressure check all the lines for free when switching to their service. they make enough money off the gas and since it is their tank you can't go with someone else to fill it.

Looks like you used white teflon tape. you may want to see if that meets code.. they have specific yellow teflon tape for gas or you can use pipe thread compound.

When I read this thread, I was feeling all holy about the fact that I paid $35 for mine, and bench tested it and everything worked. Then a buddy told me how he got his. Local LP company had to switch the heaters in their filling area over to explosion proof. Both heaters 1 year old. My buddy asked if they were looking to unload them. $15 each! He gave one to his brother.
