My 12x20 project

Well the fence is built and the house is unpacked. The worst two things I had to do post move are over. Now it's time to work on my space so my wife can get her car in the garage.



This is what I am starting with. 12x20 with a 4' Deep covered porch. Inside is just bare studs. Has a 8' wide garage door on the right side no electric no insulation. Nothing.



After throwing out and selling most of the junk the PO left behind I got started roughing in the wiring. I may have missed my chance to trench in conduit (been a rainy mess and now it's getting cold) so actual electricity might not happen til Spring.

Going with 50-60 amp service. 2 15 amp outlet circuits, a 20 amp dedicated outlet, a 15 amp lighting circuit and a 20 amp 220v circuit for my 4000 watt heater.

Once all the rough in is done I'll throw R13 and OSB on the walls and then start moving stuff in.

Spent the morning finishing up all wiring in the walls. It's all insulated now minus a couple little spots around the windows and the area by the panel. I need one roll of Kraft faced as the 3 bundles of batts pretty much got me where I needed to be and I didn't want to end up with a ton of extra R13

Bought 10 sheets of OSB to get me started covering the walls. Question. Should I go smooth or rough side out when I install it? My old garage was rough side but I'm thinking the smooth side will paint better

That insulation is getting up just in time. It's gonna be real cold pretty soon.

Are you insulating the ceiling? I might do that before OSB.

What kind of heat are you planning?

Gotta put the walls up so I can clear out the garage some so my wife can park in the garage.

Then I'll put OSB in the ceiling and lay the insulation in through an attic access. Heat will be my 4000 watt cadet heater I had at my old place

Starting to get some OSB up. The one long wall with no windows/doors on it is done. Hoping to get back out there during my sons next nap and finish the short wall with no windows/doors on it today. I am hoping by the end of the weekend all the walls are up and the electrical is trimmed out.

Well got all of it done that I could. Still have 1 sheet of OSB to put up by the breaker box but I either need to put it up with the intention of taking it back off or put it up and make an access hatch to get to the LB for the feed from the house for when I do eventually pull the service out there.

Yeah plenty of that. This will be where I work on everything but cars and where my mower gets parked. There will be benches cabinets ect. I've played around with sketch up doing some layouts but I had some dimensions off so I have to start over.

Finished off the OSB by the panel (just held in with a screw on each corner) and wired up all the outlets and installed faceplates on the two finished walls. 1/2 done with the last wall with the windows and door.

Can't wait to be done with that wall. Way too many things to fit the OSB around and odd stud spacing makes for a lot of cutting.

And first mistake. Forgot to drop in the Coax for a tv and stub it over by the area where the power feed is going to come in. Looks like il get to take 3 pieces down to fix that goof

Had about 45 min between getting home and having to go pick up my wife threw up 3 ceiling joists and mounted my new cord reel ( that shelf isn't staying there)



It's fun wiggling the 14 foot joists into a 12 foot wide space

That's exactly what they are for. Right now there are only 4 used as ties across the space. I'm just filling in the gaps so that way I have good nailers for the OSB and I'll be making an access hatch because that 16x20' space above the ceiling is too much to waste.

I'll document it all along the way. It'll be a slow process. It's rough working somewhere with no electric (cords everywhere)

I plan to backfeed 1/2 the panel via a power inlet/10 gauge extension cord until the ground thaws enough to trench in the power. That should speed things up but I need to get all the walls in first.

I'm going to type out a to do list here so it'll help me remember

Run coax near outlet cord reel is plugged into for future Tv
Finish OSB on walls
Finish ceiling joists
OSB on ceiling
Speakers in ceiling and wire going to area near bench to hook up to my car stereo set up
Insulate ceiling
Install all outlets in boxes
Install face plates
Build workbench with harbor freight end cabinet in one leg and my radio shack cabinet/cox hose reel in the other side
Hang cabinets on wall with bench
Mount heater on wall


That's it until it warms up, then wire up the sub panel, move everything so I can paint it. Might even epoxy the floor too.

The air hose reel for my bench showed up today. Another quality item from coxreels. This will be going inside of my bench. Will be able to reach to every corner of the shop with this one (25') from where the bench is going. I plan to get another and put it near the overhead door should I want some air outside. That'll come later though as at $140/ea they aren't cheap. (FYI cord reel I got was $260)

Got a chance to work on a little sketchup today at work. here are a couple views.

Black cabinet is the one i just picked up from HD for $45.03. Grinder will live on a hitch mount that I plan to put in one of the benches but it is just sitting there for fun, the area with the wrenches hanging will be peg board. The breaker box is above the bench space where the drill press is. The tool box on the bench is a maybe, Might build something into the bench, or might get a HF tool cart, I have a intermediate box that I am not using, and there won't be a ton of tools out here (small engine work, is really the only mechanic type stuff) and really I might not need it.

Compressor will live under the bench, I have a dedicated circuit wired up in that area already. Haven't decided on mounting the hose reel under the bench, or if i should put it dead center in the ceiling, I know at my old house I had it right above the work bench and hated that location, maybe under is the way to go. Underneath one of the short sides of the bench will live the parts cabinet i got from radio shack, ill adjust that side of the bench's width to match that cabinet so there isn't a gap on either side of it.

The blue cabinets are office cabinets that I painted safety blue, The little black box is a car headunit that I have rigged up to a power supply, I need to rebuild the mounting plate I made for it to match the width I have now (it was 11" previously, now i need 15". That will be wired up to 4 speakers mounted in the ceiling OSB.

I am considering a folding work bench hanging between the windows below the Home Depot cabinet. only things not shown that will roll into here are my 110V MIG, and other tools that will either go in the cabinets, on the shelves, or hang on the fasttrak system i have that will be placed along the long wall with no windows.

Any suggestions lets hear them. I also need to find the best place to put the attic ladder/access. I am thinking closer to the wall with the windows is better as the center of the roof is really about 4' off the center of the space shown because the covered porch area is in the same attic space.

yes closer to a wall. on my 8ft walls my pull down ladder extends about 6+ feet from the very end of the access cut out to where the end of the ladder hits the ground when unfolded. (hope that makes sense).

A little progress. Extreme cold and lots of family stuff going on slowed me down. Got all the OSB up on the walls. Going to start trimming out all of the electric when my kid takes another nap. After that it's just working on the ceiling and then the space should be to the point that I can use it.

I really need to get the ceiling insulation in so I can actually make it warm in there. It's 0 degrees here. Not really good conditions to doing electrical wiring. Oh well. I will continue progress next weekend.

Got all of the ceiling joists up. Didn't think of it at the time but I planned out my attic access hole for above the garage door when the door is open. I decided against a attic stair as I won't use the space much (just not tall enough to be really usable) so let me know now if you think this is completely stupid. Just seemed to be the most out of the way space. That's the only ceiling framing I have left

Making some progress today. Should have 50% of the ceiling insulation done or so and all the wiring buttoned up. I set up my outside outlet as a power inlet for the time being that will power 1/2 of my panel with a 10/3 extension cord that is plugged into a 20 amp outlet on the outside of my house. I snagged this off of amazon that makes this a clean safe backfeed.



The space will be at least semi usable then until the ground thaws enough to trench the permanent power to the shed.

8 out of the 15 ceiling bays are insulated. Temp hung two of the Costco LED lights. Installed exhaust fan (so I can smoke a cigar out there if I want to and to pull some fumes out when needed). All the OSB is up. all the outlets are trimmed out and faceplates installed. Outside dusk to dawn light is installed by the man door. I also started building my bench that will go along the back wall. There will be some 4x4s in the center but those will be spaces based on the width of the two cabinets I am going to put in there (one on each end)

Left to do
Install bulb base in attic and put a LED bulb up there
Frame attic opening
Finish insulation
Hang ceiling OSB
Reinstall shop lights
Finish work bench
Install cabinets above bench
Finish wiring sub panel

That should get me to the point that I can rock it until I paint and install the underground power feed. Then it's just little things, installing trim around Windows/door. Ect.

Moved the shelf into its final home, installed the attic light and framed out the attic opening. I need to get 3 more 2x6's for the rest of the ceiling joists and 2 bundles of batts and maybe it'll stay kinda warm in there.

If it's just for your stuff and you won't be working on cars I think it's a great size. Aside from parking the lawnmower in it (that might change based on how the attached garage looks when I get all f the stuff that I want out here moved) it's just going to be me and my stuff.

Ripped out the ghetto garage door supports (this is my second garage done like this. The kits with the punched angle are so cheap why do people do it with hacked up wood?)



You can see the hack job in this older photo I took. I took those boards and the 2x6 that spanned the garage as an extra support for this. I'll put safety cables in the springs when I put them back. For now the door is closed until I can get those tracks remounted and get a buddy over here to help me lift the door back up (should have had him here to help Lower it. Yikes that thing was heavy) I would really like to replace the door with carriage doors at some point to gain the area the tracks run back for shelves if needed in the future.

I also knocked out all the insulation in the areas I had the joists installed. Need to grab the rest of them on my way home from work tomorrow and finish the worst part of this whole project....the insulation.

First 3 sheets of OSB up. Lights back up. Also put the first post in the bench. its location is based on building a small 2 drawer/1cabinet with lift up door tool box into that side, this won't be completed until the perm power is in because I need to get back there to get the the LB. the opposite end of the bench will house my radio shack parts drawer unit. By notching the posts like that I should end up with a very sturdy bench
