My 13 Year Old RaceDeck Floor

This Covid19 crisis has given me lots of time to get projects done around the house. I spent last week in the 3rd car garage gets things cleaned up and organized. I also spent some extra time getting my RaceDeck floor in this space cleaned up and detailed, and I thought I would share the results with my GJ friends.

My daughter and I installed RaceDeck flooring in our 3rd car garage in 2007. The flooring has held up really well and I still love it 13 years later. I use this 3rd car garage for my "fun" car and for all my tools and projects.

After 13 years of use I figured it was time for a detailed cleaning. Over the years I have always kept the floor swept out and occasionally I would hit it with a wet mop. It was time for a deep and detailed cleaning. I spent about 8 hours on my hands and knees scrubbing each and every tile with Purple Power (a degreaser that RaceDeck recommends - I found it at Walmart) and some Scotch Brite scrub sponges. After cleaning all tiles, I then coated the entire floor with three rounds of "Restore" (RaceDeck sells this product). I used a mop for this process.

I am super happy with the results! The floor looks like new again and the glossy shine is impressive. I'm really happy with my RaceDeck floor and impressed with how the Restore product has given my 13 year old floor new life.

PS: A special shout out to the folks at RaceDeck and to Justin & team at Garage Flooring LLC for technical support during my cleaning process. I wanted to make sure I was doing everything right and these folks all went above and beyond in helping me restore my floor to like-new condition. Thank you!

WOW, your floor really looks terrific for how long it's been down. I like the C2 as well, but then again, I'm a little biased!

Cheers!

Looks great. I recently posted asking about cleaning my tiles (not RD tiles though.) I have to assume this process would work for me as well.

What sort of finish is left on the tiles after the restore? They look slick.

They are not slick at all. They have a shiny look when you look at them from the right perspective (with the floor between you and a light source), but they are not slippery at all. Racedeck claims that the Restore provides additional protection from dirt, dust, chemicals clinging to the tiles.

The outcome far exceeded my expectations. I tried many different cleaners but found the only one that worked well was a gallon of Purple Power. I followed that with the Restore product and my floor is now better than new.

Well worth the effort getting down and scrubbing it. Well done. Especially since i would have thought white would really show its age, but you proved that wrong

My RaceDeck flooring is about the same age. Maybe a couple years older and has a lot of little scratches from dragging jack stands, tools and the such over it. Did your restore process minimize those and what about where the tire sits, did the staining associated with that come up? I usually just spot clean and pressure wash it every couple years. But your floor looks damn good, got me thinking about trying a more through cleaning.

I have to say beautiful floor and Vette! No way in hell I would guess that floor is 13 years old.

How is the Race Deck terminated at the door opening? Your picture in Post 11 shows a termination strip of sorts, very clean end.

Looks like you started with a full tile at the garage door and then laid from there, so I assume the cut tiles are at the far end and sides?

I need to look at this system more carefully. My concrete garage floor has cracks and a peeling prior gray coating of who knows what.

How do you keep a white work bench clean? Do you put something down on it before using it? Also curious about your white back board behind your hanging hand tools. Are you cleaning the wrenches every time you do a car project? I chose gray and black colors for my shop in the hope they would show less. My gray tiles do show some stains, but they are pvc and the softer material stains more than the hard plastic tiles. I am not sure the coating would protect against that but I am curious.

The scrubbing with Purple Power and a scotchbrite sponge removed everything except for some staining on a tile under each of the four tires. I wash the car in this garage frequently and I am constantly applying lots of tire dressing. The dressing sometimes runs off the tires on to the tiles under the tires. I found nothing could clean up the staining on those tiles under the tires. After 13 years of use, I decided it was time to replace the white tiles under the tires (especially since the rest of the floor now looks like new). I found a Youtube video on how to replace the individual tiles without taking the entire floor apart. I popped the old yellowed / blackened tiles out and put the new ones in. Now the entire floor looks like new.

The Restore was the finishing touch. It adds a gloss shine without making the floor slippery.

Edge of Tile
When I installed the flooring years ago, I started at the edge of the garage where the garage door comes down. I installed a transition piece along this edge which acts as a small ramp up from the concrete level to the Racedeck floor in the garage. I ordered these transition pieces from Racedeck when I bought the floor. The pieces are 12" wide and match up to the same snap in design on the tiles. I have not had a problem with any of them over the years.

Workbench Area
I keep a cleaner handy near the workbench and I spray it down frequently. I also put a fresh coat of paint on the bench every year - I always grab a partial can of paint that has been leftover and paint it quickly. I always have some left over White Semi Gloss or Gloss paint. Who knows how many coats of paint it has on it at this time.

Yes, I do give my tools a quick wipe down if I am working on a car. The majority of my projects are house fix-ups and woodworking / building projects though.

I find tire dressing stains the asphalt in my driveway when I do the tires on the car outside.

Looks great. I just ordered their MotoFloor line tiles from Costco to give them a try and hoping they meet my expectations with no gaps and strength so I don't have to return 700 sqft.

bikerneil, can the Restore product be purchased at the big box stores or only from RaceDeck? Could you post a picture of the Restore bottle or jug? How much Restore did you use? Thanks. CJDave.

CJDave - I used about 40% of a gallon for my 1 car garage floor. I applied 3 coats, and I applied it at fairly generous rate.

I purchased the product from my RaceDeck supplier (Garage Flooring LLC).

It looks like the product is made by Janpro and is known as ENDURE. It looks like it is a commercial grade product that would not be found at any big box store.

Thanks bikerneil. A thorough rejuvenation of my floor is on my "to do" list. What was the time between coats of Restore? Stay safe. CJDave.

I applied coats after about an hour of dry time, but I believe I could have done successive coats faster than that.

What is the cost/SF of RaceDeck?

My Free Flow from RaceDeck was about $!500 for 500 sf with 40 pieces of the tapered edge (wasn't sure what color of edge would look best so I ordered enough of two colors) and I ordered 3 or 4 extra tiles in each of my 3 colors. That was 6 years ago. Mention that you are a member of Garage Journal to get the member discount. Don't remember how much the discount is. I love mine and wouldn't change a thing. CJDave.

I used Purple Power at full, non-diluted strength. I poured it in a spray bottle and sprayed it on 4 tiles at a time. Then I scrubbed each tile with a heavy duty scotch brite sponge (scruffy side). I scrubbed hard back and forth, then up and down, then in diagonal direction both ways to clean both sides of the little diagonal ridges on each tile. After scrubbing I wiped with a dry clean cotton cloth.

After all tiles were scrubbed, I then used the Renew product.

And by the way, I just discovered that my floor is actually 15 years old, I found this old picture from 2005 below that showed I had the floor in my garage then. So I guess the title of this thread should actually be "My 15 Year Old RaceDeck Floor". Ha!

Thanks for sharing the restoration of your flooring. I'm hoping to add Racedeck to my garage this year, and I'm thinking about the solid tiles. Here in Vancouver we don't have a lot of snow so the FreeFlow isn't needed. Most of the pictures I see online are FreeFlow, so it's great to see a long lasting solid tile floor.
