Going 4x is definitely the way to go for a checkered pattern. 1x just looks too busy. Any issues putting it down? Are you parking a car on it? Did you put any extra protection on it?

I screwed up when I put down my white VCT in my basement because I didn't wax it right away. I ended up spilling a bunch of dirty water when draining my furnace and no matter how much grinding I never got the stains out of the tiles.
