My 2 Car Safe Haven

I bought my first home a little over a year ago. I had 2 requirements, a big backyard and a detached garage. So I now a small 2 car garage, to go with my 50's California home.
The Garage was used sorely for storage by the previous owners and was packed to the rafters. To the point that they installed a center vertical support to keep the **** from bringing it down.

All Cleaned out, first time my car has been indoors

Shortly after getting the garage into a clean and usable space, a friend had to clear out his Fathers garage after the house was sold. He had worked at Ford AreoTech and all of his shop equipment had come from that facility. I could take whatever I wanted as long as I got it out fast.

So this happened.

I got some really great stuff from my buddy. All of which was massively heavy, as most good shop stuff is.

So most everything in my garage is vintage or hand-me downs, and all of it is in need of restoration. So I have opened up this gallery because I know the GJ guys are a source of great information and motivation. I'm looking for general advise or suggestions. I will keep updating as I go through this process.

First Question;
Does anyone recognize this workbench? I can't find a manufacture stamp anywhere on it and I would love to know how old it is.

Yes, The workbench is all steel with a wood top.

I'm guess your garage is about 18-20 feet wide. I'd just about bet that you could remove that 4x4 pole in the middle and never know the difference. I'd check with a contractor or someone and see. You might be able to get that out of the way. Nice place by the way.

I love what you have to begin with!! It will look great. Whatever you do, never let those wonderful mid century cabinets and desks and shelves get away from you. They are true treasures!!! They will all look great re-done.

I actually did remove that center post. It was just held in place by 2 bolts to the rafters and nothing into the concrete. I added some new rafter supports as well some upper storage shelves. After those were in place a few taps with a sledge hammer and some nervous "Easy's" from my Dad, it came right out.

So starting somewhat small to big I tackled the ugliness of the fridge and the parts bin first.
I roughed up the surface of the fridge and brushed off all the surface rust from the front. I used automotive primer to prep the white surface and then used a black enamel roll on paint. I'm still not sure what to do about the water/ice dispenser in the door, which does not work. Thinking about putting a piece of stainless over it to make it look a little cleaner. My father feels we should figure out how to turn the freezer and dispenser into a keggerator and make it a in door tap. But that's a later project and maybe complicated.

I then tackled the parts bin which was previously brown and rusty. Now a nice sage green with felt inserts in the shelves so they don't fall into the same condition it was originally.

I moved into my house 10 years ago and was going to do the floors the following summer.....by then it was too late and now the thought of moving all my stuff keeps me from doing it.

A half barrel will fit great in the fridge side, with regulators and CO2, and a tap on the front (or side). Still plenty of room in the fridge for non adult beverages if you build some shelves. The freezer is a good place for glass mugs, and other misc frozen stuff. The tap and regulator and tank kit can be had for under $200.

This same thing is on my to do list....

So far so good! Do a simple google search on frig/ kegerators. I found a couple companies that sell a complete kit including the tool to cut the hole through the door.

That is a good suggestion, I hadn't put much thought towards the flooring. I'll look around on GJ and see what flooring options seem to be good for my application. I like the idea of the hard rubber/composite tile snap together flooring, but I'm nto sure how level my floor is and there is a substantial crack running the length of the garage down the center. That might make the snap together stuff more difficult.
