My $20 prize (mistake?)

I picked up this dirt box for $20. It's rough, but will be entertaining to repair and will hold me over until I find a tool box I really like. Right now my tools are packed like a Cuban raft into a little tool cart. It is a major pain when frequently having to get tools for a project.

First order of business will be disassembly and clean-up. From there I'll sort out which bits are actually distorted (mangled?) and try to make them true once more. From there, prep and paint. Finally, enjoy.

Edit: My garage isn't that dirty anymore, I promise. :)

I would be happy to find that. I need storage, anything that works is good for my needs. I dont have anyone else in my shop wanting to steel (borrow) my tools. No one does a vanity check on my stuff either.

That looks like it will be a good box after some adjustment. I would guess that the lock sets that they sell at Sears would fit in the top box. It looks like the same set up as my C-man box

Looks a lot like my CMAN box. Only thing I don't like is the huge opening on the bottom box. Im thinking about building a drawer for mine.

I had almost the same top box. It was pretty well made. Bought it new in the mid 1990's

$20, how could you go wrong with a price like that! Anything that can store tools for that cheap is a great find.

"packed like a Cuban raft"......made me laugh!

Yea, I'm really happy with the find. I knew it'd be rough, but finding tool storage on the cheap is always good. Part of the fun will be restoring it though.

What sort of paint do you guys recommend that would be durable for a toolbox?

I'll be sure to post more here as I restore it.

My buddy just gave me a setup just like that, in a bit better shape, but I'm sure with some "brightening" it will be good as new. I look forward to seeing your restoration.

BTW, I wish I could find one like that at that price. It would get a full on custom paint job....Then get filled with tools.

I sure wouldn't say no for that price. I am sure that you will like much more after you repair it than if you had just bought it brand new.

So I vote NOT A MISTAKE.

I have a similar Husky box from @ 1996 and it's had a hard life but still works well. It used to be chained in the back of my service truck years ago, and then a log truck hit the truck and banged up the box. Some pounding out and a couple welds where the factory one's split and it's still going strong! Definately worth $20!
