I wanted to start a thread on here as my incentive to keep my new shop moving forward. We have only moved a couple weeks ago and so far the house is working out pretty great. I've been busy as heck with work, trying to move, training for a marathon in November, having work done on both the old and new houses, PTA, church, etc. so I haven't had much garage time.

I have run everyday for more than 340 days, and it has helped my running quite a bit. My goal here is to develop my garage habit and post something being done every day in the shop or the house. Lots of flexibility in that and I'm ok with posting about having a beer in the garage to brainstorm on something, unpacking a box, or finishing a honey-do item.

That said, I've been short of space to work and have been changing oil on a gravel drive for a long time, so one of my primary goals with my garage is to be productive.

My garage out back is a 24x24 with a 10' ceiling. To make up for being a bit smaller there are sheds for bikes, yard ****, and other stuff.

Enough of that, lets get on to the pictures...

I'm thinking about what I can do to make projects flow through the space. I work on my dd, a couple of trucks (Dodge half ton and GMC one ton flatbed w/liftgate, both 1989), motorcycles, do woodworking, and I'd like to include a workout space.

Thanks. It's busy but good. Posting everyday may be a miss lol, but I did go to the garage and did something, just fell asleep without doing the post. First, Last night we had middle school division cross country championship. My daughter placed second and her schools teams both won--good job by all the runners!

Garage content: unpacked a couple boxes. Trying to keep some of the move chaos out of the house, the garage became a holding place for things without a permanent location. Some of which I am still searching for. So I did a little shuffling and and unpacked a few things.

I need to bring the rest of my wood from the old house so I can sticker and stack my small supply in a useful way, which will in turn free up about a quarter of a parking space in a prime section of the garage. I also have to move the best of my tool storage and woodworking equipment, and my motorcycles. Was hoping to make trip last night but kids, dinner with the in laws after the meet, etc. took precedence.

Night before last I finished setting up the washer and dryer so we can process laundry again--that was a high priority.

Today, the electrician returns in the a.m. And I have a community meeting tonight.

I spent some time tonight drawing a layout of the garage and contents on graph paper.
I need to play with it a little and see how it I feel about it. I want to keep the stall on the right empty so I can park in it if I want, or use it for a project. So the left side needs to hold things and still have space to work. I have a fair number of metal cabinets that I would like to keep in the plan, so I may need to remove the wall mounted wood work bench. I need to measure some stuff that isn't here.

Sign up for and use the Layout Planner. I find it much easier than graph paper and will give you the same overhead layout. You can also make multiple copies of the same design so you can play around with it. All you need are dimensions of the garage and objects inside. Just be careful with anything, like a cabinet, with a door swing. the door swing is counted in to the dimensions. They have a ton of preset items like vehicles, cabinets, countertops, etc.

Thanks for the idea. I've used a couple of those shop planners. I never feel like I get it. I tried a little tonight with it. I didn't find some of the equipment that I expected, like a jointer.

I need to get set on where to put my storage cabinets, because all the boxes need to go into the cabinets, which is where I will find my workshop space.

I did forget to mention that the planner is a little light on the equipment side. I've found for anything that doesn't have a specific likeness I either use the toolbox or a rectangle as a placeholder. Make sure you get actual dimensions of what is in your shop/garage. I find that actually naming the piece of equipment at the top and having a color scheme helps. All of my shop equipment, like a drill press or table saw, are all blue so I know exactly what I'm looking at. Toolboxes and carts are red or black. I have two identically sized carts in black so I named one "Tool Cart" and one "Welding Cart" so when I click on them I know which one it is.

Also, if you move a bunch of things around in that program make sure you hit "Save". I have done a lot of work before only to forget to save and have the window refresh the next time I open it. On the flip side if you don't feel like making a copy to mess with you can change and move anything you want and without pressing the "Save" button none of it will be permanent.

Thanks for the tips, Amkluttz. I had already started using toolboxes to represent other pieces and also started color coding. I think it is helping my thought process--I think I am going to try putting shelves and less used roll cabs along the right hand wall, and treating some of the left stall like Matthew Teague's one car workshop that he did in Connecticut a few years ago. In just thinking about it so far, I realized I have forgotten some items like some cabinets, a dust collector and a shaper.

I may be able to bring another group of stuff back from the old place tonight. I have three Listas and an Equipto (I think) that can hold a ton of stuff, so getting them to the new place will help. They are a pain to move by myself, and I probably need to build bases for them--see attachment. Not a great shot, but the walls are on top of concrete block so I can gain a few inches of space by building a base and being able to push things all the way to the wall. Is my math on this correct? 3"x(24'x12 or 288")=864 square inches per wall. 864x4=3456. 3456/144=24 square feet to gain by using the ledge.
It would also make it harder to lose things behind the cabinet. I don't want to create a place for critters,

The Lista's could also be put on wheels and I'd prefer that. I will take a better picture of the Equipto to get some ideas about how to put it on wheels. It is tall and the cabinet itself is not very rigid.

During nice weather you can use that area for work area and use the blower to get rid of the sawdust.

Im not sure what I will end up doing with the covered porch; enjoy beverages seems pretty high on my list. I agree, cutting materials, sanding, etc would be good uses.

I ran 18 miles this morning. My marathon is two weeks from today. Then I went to the old house. We've had a bit of a drought which has helped me because I haven't cut grass in probably 2.5 months. I wanted to do that today, but the riding mower would start and the battery needed a charge. Haven't had this mower too long but it didn't want to be jumped until the battery got some charge. So I packed stuff in the truck while it was charging. I'm at a point where things are just a little harder. Like woodworking clamps, I can only hold so many at a time, and a putting them in a box doesn't help. Plus they are on the other side of the house where I can't take my truck. It's at least 75 feet. With the run and everything, I have 41,000 steps for the day.

Got the mower started, cut the grass, tried to load the mower. The deck caught of the ramps or the truck bed. I was driving it up the ramps, and luckily didn't fall and was able to catch the mower and get it in the bed of the truck. Took that load to the house, took the truck back and got the car (also loaded with stuff), took it to the new house, unloaded some of it, showered, and went to help with an event tonight at church for about 4 hours. I'm pretty tired now lol.

I wasn't home much today. Ran 9 miles, went to church, taught religious ed(6th graders). Ran an errand and we had a picnic with some families from preschool. Came home and took daughter and teammate to park to walk the course for their county championship meet later this week. Came back, cut the grass at the new house.

It's much nicer having most of my stuff under one roof. I needed something for the mower and even though almost nothing is unpacked, I was pretty much able to go right to what I needed.

I got one box from the garage unpacked today.

Not much on Monday. Had a work event last night and stopped at the old house on the way home to pick up a few things: couple of tool boxes and my miter saw.

I know I could benefit from a shop space that is seperate from my house. Make all the noise I want and not have to worry about waking up the kids. I have been thinking a lot about what is an ideal size for my needs but have to strongly consider the size of my lot (3/4 acre city). I have thought a 24x24 would be perfect for what I need so I'll be watching to see how yours is laid out once it's populated with equipment.

Well, it has been a busy weekend and all I have to show for it is a fuller garage. I brought a couple loads of things in the car. On one of errands yesterday we brought the truck to the new place. I'd been driving the car to the old place, then filling the truck, come back, unload, take the to the old place switch cars etc. now I can take the truck and make a trip a lot easier. Lot of large tools still need to be moved.

This will not be a week of great progress. I've got a lot at work and I tapering and resting for my marathon next Saturday.

Yes, 89 D150. I've driven it more the last six weeks than the rest of the time I've owned it which is probably about nine years. It hasn't been washed in about that long either, so doubt I'll take pics.

Hey, What pitch roof is on that? Im building a 24x24 with 10 foot ceilings with 10/12 pitch attic trusses. How much room do you have up top? I kinda want to put a staircase inside the garage for easier access to storage up stairs or future man cave even. Only problem I have with this is giving up space in the garage for the staircase.Another option is putting a man door up top on the gable end and building stairs up to it outside. Kinda cant make up my mind what to do

I don't know what happened. I typed up something like this earlier in the week but I probably forgot to hit the post button.

My marathon was last Saturday and I ran just under 3:25, fast enough to qualify me for Boston for the first time. It was a personal best by more than 20 minutes thanks to nicely negative splits. I also completed my 365th consecutive day of running.

I'm still bringing things from my old workshop to the new house. I've made several more trips. I think I will be able to be off of work for most of next week. I hope to bring the rest of my tools and cabinets, and move the wood and other things that won't stay in the garage to where they need to go. There is a lot of putting stuff away that needs to be done.

Caper, I'm not sure what pitch the roof is. I was only up in the attic once briefly when we first saw the house, but I need to get up there anyway so I will try to give you some idea what kind of space is in mine.

Congrats for qualifying for the Boston marathon. Lots of hard work and time dedicated to that. I knew some friends that trained for the Wash DC Marine Corps marathon and I remember the course they had set up. -4 miles and 4 cycles through it. Water bottles set up to pick up each time they passed by.

Caper, I think this is 8/12. Over 36" it rises 24". Check my math lol.
Floor is 11' across and 23' 6". The the top truss? Is 5' across and a bot 5'9" off the deck. Let me know if you have more questions.

Moved a lot of stuff around. Now I should have space to bring the rest of my cabinets. Took a couple of pics, including one of my first ride, a Schwinn Stingray Midget. My big brother learned to ride on it, and he taught me when the training wheels came off about 49 years ago

The Dodge is not driving well. Every time I brake or slow down it dies. It will sit and idle parked just fine. I checked all the fluids and things looked normal. I'm sure it could use a good tune up but I think this is something bigger. I drove it to get several other large items today but I had to get it started again several times each way. We had rain this morning so that slowed me down, then I had to go back to the old house to meet a contractor.

I only got the drawers for the listas and one cabinet moved. Then I realized that the Lista cabinets won't fit under the built in counter. I'm not sure what plan B is, but I'm thinking maybe gang them together in the middle of the room and turn them into a freestanding workbench.

Running a 10k turkey trot tomorrow. Happy Thanksgiving!

16' uhaul truck sitting in the drive waiting for unloading. Took all day to load and I'm beat. The Equipto and Lista cabinets are in it, as well as the air compressor, jointer, Craftsman roll cab, a Snap-On base, and a bunch of other stuff.

Well, obviously I totally missed posting. Like everyone else, 2020 has been a hell of a year. I have had other things on my mind and the garage was more of a burger than a refuge. I tried to get back into it but it was slow going. On thing I did was to rent a moving truck another weekend (this was before the July 4 holiday) and move a couple more loads of things from my old house. That really filled my garage.

For a while I just was kind of putzing, not making any progress. Back a couple of months ago, a friend of mine posted something on FB about getting rid of her father's workshop stuff. I asked her about what she was doing, really just offered to try to help. She invited me over to take a look. She and her husband live on her father's place now. Her father passed several years ago and things had just been left to sit. She was going through things and she might be saving a few things, like screws that weren't rusty or something that she liked like small hammers. The rest they were just going to scrap. Well, I took just about everything that I could fit into my car, including a vice, an anvil, clamps, tools etc. I offered to buy but she was just happy to have things going somewhere they would be appreciated.

It kind of set me in motion, because it was hard to fit one more thing into my garage. One of the first things I decided I needed to do was remove the built in counter. Hated to do it, because it was 12' feet long, really sturdy and nice. But the space under it was wasted for me and I couldn't afford to lose. Here is a pic of it coming down.

And here is what I put in its place. From the left, the card file, and Equipto base cabinet with a butcher block top left by the previous owner, and my three Listas. The tall gray Equipto cabinet was mine and is where I put it when I moved in--it's a bear to move.

I had some countertop that came out of some lab that I had gotten with some free white base kitchen cabinets that I thought I might use. I had decided the kitchen cabinets were not for me and offered them to my neighbor, who said he was interested. He dicked around for a several weeks before getting with me to say he couldn't use them after all. Kind of slowed things down but he is a friend so what do you do. any way, getting rid of those cabinets freed up a lot of space, too, and some of the counter tops are now in place on the Listas.

I also had a pair of 48" wide metal base cabinets. They were originally used in a lab, and an employee got to take them home. They passed to the employee's kid, who eventually was ready to get rid of them and I got them from freecycle or CL for nothing. They were at the old house and I was trying to figure out how to get them moved and fit into the puzzle. They are a hell of lot better than the white kitchen cabinets and a better use of my space. Glad I got things moving along and got them moved. I also used some of the free countertop on the lab cabinets.

The four double tube 8' flourecent lights in the garage were in bad shape when I moved in. I picked up a couple bulbs and they helped in one fixture but the ballast was shot in the other. I ended up buying a pair of Halco led bypass bulbs. They may not be the best but they are pretty good to me and were easy to install
