Well, they've started moving dirt around..

A little back story, our house burned 1/3/13 and we began looking for a new spot to live. Found a house about 75% of the way done, signed some papers last week and they started breaking ground today on the shop.

Lots of decisions still to be made, but we are started.

I'm sure it is. We have 2 year old twins and we all got out safely.

It's raining cats and dogs, so I only drove by to see the progress.

Going to have a double door on the front, man door on front left side. Window on the back left with a 6' garage door in the back left corner for "drive through" and cross ventilation in the summer. I'll have another window of the front right corner.

Back right corner will be my main bench. My Trans Am and Bronco can't wait to see their new home. ;)

Looks good. Just bought a house Friday and looking to build the same size with brick. If you don't mind me asking how much you think the garage would cost when complete.

I'm paying $18k for this one, with power run but the interior will be unfinished.. It'll be bricked to match the house..

Very sorry to hear about losing your other home. Hopefully everyone was out and the pets were also out, if you had any. Like you said, material possessions can be replaced, Lives can't.

Looking forward to see how things turn out. Post of some pics of the new home when you get a chance.

Thanks for all the kind words.

We all got out, with the exception of a kitty cat. She was an outdoor cat, but we cannot find her.

I'm located in Alabama.

Plans for the shop? Oh my. LOL. I do, but where to start, is the question.

I have a 1966 Bronco I'm restoring, luckily it was at another location, so it'll be coming here to live.

I need to finish the garage out. So walls, most likely OSB thinking about staining them) and a bench will be early works.

Lost about all my tools but one ratchet set, a compressor and a drill press. So I need to start over there as well.

I think I'll put 2 50' hose reels in the ceiling. One at the front, one at the back.

I'm rambling.

I'll get some pics of the entire build.

This is all I've got on my phone. Looking at the back.

Here's a shot of the interior..

Anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking my workbench will live in the back right corner.

Ah couldn't get a grasp of the blade spinning with the extended range tank out there. Also was thinking Barksdale LA for some reason, but your AL.

Back to work.

Ok, so a quick update. It was starting to snow, they were working on the driveway and I was headed to the airport, but I snagged a quick update shot..

I got to speak with the "Modification Design Committee" (consists of 1 guy. LOL) today about some plans I have..

I have been thinking about adding a simple lean-to across the back of the shop - mainly to have somewhere to put my compressor without hearing it and saving the footprint. 24x24 makes real estate a commodity.

Well, the "design committee" said my plans for a simple lean-to on the back of the shop were ok, so now before I even get into my space, I need to start thinking about how best to accomplish this.

I'd like to keep it open, the back yard will be fenced in soon, and just put a roof over the top.

Well, it's finished and we are living in the new house.

Need to outfit the garage, starting with some lights.

Well, it's not a huge update, I finally found a little bit of time to get some light into the shop.

Still need to wire up some outlets, that'll be next. I also plan on another set of lights directly over the 8' bench I plan on building.

Well, it's coming along..

Finally got some outlets in, wired up a 50A circuit for the welder.

Trying to decide where to stock the compressor. Ideally, a lean to outside would be excellent, but I think that may be out of the budget ATM. Not really sure what it would cost, may be in the budget. LOL

OK, so I'm looking for a home for the compressor in case the lean to is out of the budget.

My plans are to run a 50' spool of hose on the north side of the shop, that way I can reach anywhere in the shop and some into the driveway. I'm also considering putting the compressor on the north wall between the garage doors, seems like that would be the most "out of the way" location..

Anyone have any suggestions?

This is looking at the north wall.

This is southerly looking. I plan on putting 2 8' workbenches along this southern wall..

This is my newest shop addition.

Finally getting somewhere in here.. Got a bench built and will be moving in some of my tools that were not at the old house when it burnt..

New bench and my best 2 helpers.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1375998806.129887.jpg

I've also started working on refurbing an old tanker desk.

I picked up the desk and found out the top was damaged, after I drove 2 hours to get it, so we worked out an agreeable price and I brought it home.

As I found it. You can see the damage in the top right corner. I think the seller tried to get something off it and wound up ruining the top.

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1375999004.088390.jpg

Dirty?

ImageUploadedByTapatalk1375999342.004967.jpg

So I started thinking about how to fix it. The desk is obviously steel under the "Velvoleum" top, so I figured I could peel the old top off and work with the steel top.

Started peeling the top.

As a fellow Alabama resident, and Crimson Tide rooter, you used a word I'm unfamiliar with----Snow----

Those of us living in Baldwin County are sure it's against the law...

Really nice garage...I will be building a similar structure, as soon as my pensions permit...

My nine Grandchildren will be my helpers...got to keep an eye on the little ones...

Best of luck on your "post fire" life...all your people got out...God bless you and yours...

I would wire the outlets at about waist level. Down on the floor makes no sense to me for a shop. You should probably put the lights on a different circuit than the outlets - so you still have light if the breaker trips. 20A circuits are what I ran. I used 7/16 OSB on the walls and then skim coated it with drywall compound before painting. If you don't skim coat it the OSB will soak up a ton of paint and still be rough when you are done. If you use setting compound (the stuff sold dry) it will be water resistant and dry much faster. OSB walls let you hang things anywhere. I wish my compressor was quieter and/or outside. I do a lot of woodworking and wish the DC was outside too.

Thanks and Roll Tide.. :)

Glad to hear that you got out of the fire ok. Were they ever able to determine the cause?

Extension cord shorted on the backporch.

Done..

I've been wondering about the best way to accomplish this. I've not considered using a skim coat. I think I'll try it.

Thinking about building a small lean-to for the compressor and whatever else might wind up out there..
