I am currently tearing down an old barn and replacing it with a new 24x40x10 pole barn with a concrete floor.

Here is the floor plan I am going with. Anybody see anything that they would change or doesn't look optimal?

I have a 30'x40'x10', posts are 6"x6". That was what was recommended by lumber company material was purchase from.

6"x6" posts for sure on a building that big. I would put a wider garage door at the end with the single garage door. Never know when you need to get something through the door that is wider then 9 feet.

I just built a 30x40x14 set up pretty similar. I did two 10x10 front over head doors and I wish I would've done one big door, like a 18ft or so. Backing in my trailer through the single 10ft doors is doable but not a simple task. Other than that it looks good. I'd go at least 12' on the ceilings for when you decide you want a lift, which won't take long.

24' is pretty narrow for two 9' doors. I like to keep the OH doors at least 4' off the INSIDE of the nearest wall. 6' is better.
Remember... Your building is 24' x 40' to the OUTSIDE of the framing. You will lose a foot on the inside due to the wall thickness. In your plan you will have about a foot from the edge of the OH doors to the inside walls. You will have NO room for storage or benches along either of those walls and you will be cramped to even open up the car doors.
If you put that OH door in the long side you will be pretty cramped for working room with a vehicle parked in there also. 23' doesn't leave much room for benches or storage in front of a vehicle either.
26' wide would be better, 30' would be best.

My garage is 24' wide and we can't open the outside car doors all the way. Really annoying. If you are actively parking cars, i would add at least 4'.

Should have driven your truck into the building you have, then opened the hood, tailgate and doors. Can't judge the measurements of the building but it its close to the size you want it would give you an idea of workability area!

Finished tearing the old barn down today.

Here is what it looked like with all the siding removed and most of the good wood removed

It came down as planned and missed the playset by a few feet

And the kids loved it

I would have to agree with everyone else on the width. My 20' wide is basically a 1 car after I add in benches and a lift. My lift is about 11' wide and it has to be 1.5' from the edge.

I would like to go wider but my house and barn are on a hill and that is about as wide as I could go.

The good news is the only car that will be in there regularly is my truck. I will pull other cars in to work on them but I don't plan to have three or four cars in there on a regular basis.

Got six trees down (3 cherry, 3 elm) and got everything split and stacked. Skid steer comes tomorrow to start site prep.

Started grading the area today. Hope to have it ready for posts by the end of the weekend and then set the posts next weekend.

We have had tons of rain so things slowed down.

On the advice of a few concrete contractors, I decided to get at least the roof on before I pour the floor. So, I set the trusses today.

I hope to get the roof on this weekend.

Next, came the concrete. Had the help of a friend that use to do concrete for a living and a few other buddies to do grunt work.

My car and truck fit in real nice with plenty of room left over.

It's a little tight with the van next to the car but there is enough room that it can park in front of my truck.

So all that is left is to build some shelves and begin to move my tools from the garage!!!

It was a super fun project, took about 2 months longer that I had hoped (I started in March and originally hoped to be done by the beginning of June) but I will take the extra time that goes along with the pride of doing almost the project myself with no hired help and a little help from friends.

I really love seeing the pics with the family getting in there and working with you! families that build together, stay together! Good work!!!

I guess I never really understood why guys build "man caves" to do stuff to get away from their wife and kids. Sure, everyone needs a hobby and some alone time but, for me, there is no more fun than spending a day with my wife and/or kids and working hard together. Maybe I am lucky that I got a wife and kids that are amazing and fun to be around.
