Its been 10 years in the planning, but the dirt is finally getting dug. The excavator showed up and is making short work of it. I'll keep the board posted as time allows. The plan is 12' ceilings with a 2 post lift and a small bath. For the new wife, 2 beds and a bath above. I'm really busy so this my drag out for awhile. YEAH!!!!

That's a heck of a wall you had to put up to retain the bank. Is that dirt or more like gravel. From the pic it looks like gravel. Looks like it will make for a good base.

Looking forward to the build pics. BTW...Welcome to the board!!!

Sorry for the delay, Most of the earth being retained by those walls is hard pan. When I placed them several years ago I put about a 1' of 3/4 stone behind to help with drainage and take some of the latarial load off the wall.
Here are the newest pics of the dig. It should be done tomorrow.

actualy, there is going to be a small mudroom with a closet and the bath (with a shower stall) and a wood or pellet stove. This chews up abit of my garage space but it'll be nice to have a bath for the garage and my existing bedroom on the lower level of the house. Have to walk a flight to take a wiz.

Its looking abit better today, The plan is for 12' ceilings thats why its this deep. Rear wall is a full 32' long 12' high + footing, going to be reinforced 12" thick as it is acting as a retaining wall in some aspects, Its tough building on a sloped site.

Looks good, Did you end up with the upstairs on the same level as the old house or is there a step up into new addition. Looks like you just excavated the garage floor deeper and have a step down to the garage. I wish I would have done that to give me some extra height.

Both, at the existing "lower" house level we built a mudroom that is on same level as the house, when you come out of this enclosed mudroom you will step down 4-5' to garage level. The existing "Upper" house level requires you to 1 step up into a breakfast area / bedroom foyer area in the addition. I really didn't want a step up here, the issue was the ground water bubbling up everywhere and didn't want to go any deeper with the hole. I lucked out in that it worked out two be only one step. We will try to finish the lower level this year. All the addition above will have to waite till next year
