How you guys doing, Everyone calls me Mande and I am new to your site. I am active duty military, 22 years old and just bought my first house before deployment. I got back from that deployment 3 weeks ago and now I am getting ready to paint the garage move some stuff around and hopefully do the floor here in the next few weeks. I figured some people would enjoy seeing this so why not post it. Plus it will be a great tool to look back at how it was previously.

My background consists of Active duty military 4th year in April 2011. Before that I did bodywork and paint for BMW, Chevy, Toyota in Binghamton NY for about 3 years. While I was in highschool I took automotive classes and starting my second year I became a apprentice at the dealership, who seemed to like me enough to give me a job after my apprenticeship was over. Enough about me, onto the garage.

Just a 2bay nothing special I am not sure about the dimensions of it, I will get them later on if I can find them, Garage will be pretty much my space to get out of the house and do oil changes, brake changed the basic stuff, later
on start doing bodywork and paintwork again. Hopefully after my next deployment I can come home and buy a project car to build. Either a classic to restore, or a car to build for Autox.

First question for you guys. Looking for a opinion really. Im using a craftsmans laser level to get all my lines level. But on the right side of my garage there is no trim its just concrete bricks to the floor, would you paint to the floor? Or leave it white? New pics as well.

So is your home in Binghamton now? I had some friends there a long time ago.
I had a home like yours when I first got out of the Air Force and finished my aviation training and hired on at Rockwell. I mostly built drag bikes, but did some car work, like putting a 350/350 combo in my LUV pickup. What I did to make the shop more livable, was to build a small out building, connected to the house outside the garage, that I mounted my compressor in. I put a single door on it, just enough room for the compressor, some yard tools, and a push mower. Three walls, a roof and floor was all there is to it. A door and vent located at the right height to let air pass over the compressor motor. That got the yard tools out of my garage, and more importantly, I no longer had to listen to the compressor! I built mine on a raised wood floor, which further dampened sound. I also ran the air drain line into the garage so I didn't have to go outside to drain the airtank each night (which I only did weekly anyway).
Just match the siding and shingles...
Paint to the floor, then stain the floor.

second i would paint everything from the line down no matter what. if you don't the blocks would stand out instead of blending in. just my 2cents. you have a great space and cool house for being 22. keep up the good work

Your garage is about the same size as mine. One change that gave me added space and kept the noise level down was moving the compressor outside. I built a small shed for it and plumbed copper airlines into the garage.

Got it all masked off, redid it a couple of times because I wasnt very happy with how the lines came out, but finally came up with a plan that worked...
The laser level I had mounted on my tool box and just kept spinning it each direction. Then I realized that the lines were getting narrower and narrower as I went towards the door. So I peeled it, tryed something else that didnt work. Finally I used my camera tripod, got it to the height I wanted, leveled the laser and it worked. each time I moved it, I just releveled it and it worked perfect.
Heres the pics of it all masked off, not sure if I am going to lay a coat of paint tonight or if I am going to wait till tomorrow.

When i go to do the garage floor in a week or so, am i gonna have problems with getting the paint on the walls as well? Never done floors so not sure how big of a deal they are.

Dose the door open into the garage ? if so id carry your stripe and lower wall color across it to blend in. Just a thought

First and foremost thank you for your service!!! As far as painting the floor if you are going to put in some sort of base molding you wont have to be perfect but I vote paint it to the floor then if you are worried about the floor paint getting on the wall just tape it off first. By the way if you put in a full tour the paint can wait another day Enjoy the time with your wife!

Finished painting today, pics are below. When I peeled the tape it looks like the paint kinda soaked into the paint below the tape. I would like to edge all of the lines with a sort of black pinstripe to clean it up. It isnt bad, but I want it perfect lol. I was wondering if automotive pinstriping would work on garage walls? Ive never heard of it or anything, but it would be easy to do and cheap. Any suggestions??

Absolutely know where Afton is. My father used to take us all to the county fair and the fireworks that used to be in Afton about 55 years ago. Great country in upstate NY (in the summer LOL). Nothing like working on a car up north when the undercarriage is caked with ice/snow and begins to melt while you are under it and drip in your face and down your neck.

The paint turned out great ! the side door dosnt look too bad without the stripe. Wish i had done a stripe or 2 tone before i moved all the stuff back in. Id buy a roll of the automotive stripe and see how it sticks and if not your not out a whole lott.

Not sure if that is a Texas thing, mine and the neighbors are all the same. I am not sure though to be honest.

Afton is a great little town, but I'm slightly biased since I grew up there many moons ago. Spent many days at the Afton Fair (still hanging on, but a far cry from what it used to be). Highlight of the fair for me was always Joie Chitwood's show on the last night of the fair. For a few years they also had Jack Kochman's Hell Drivers earlier in the week. Sadly both shows has been gone for quite a while, so that gives you a clue to my vintage!

I have never heard of that lol. But I do miss it, riding the rides till I was almost sick, then jumping on my bike and riding back across the bridge to my house

for those attempting this in the future on textured walls, you can avoid that bleed by putting a very thin film of caulk on the edge of the tape. It seals it to the wall and makes the lines very crisp.

My home in Vegas has textured walls and I use the tape-caulk method to transition from one color to the other and the line is razor sharp.

Looks great! I have that same laser level so I might just steal your taping idea.
