I started my 30x40x10 on august 1st 2012, I just finished it on June 1st 2013, I did 99% of the work myself with the help of some friends and family who mainly helped me set the trusses and get the roof sheetmetal on. i will try to start posting all the pics i took through out the project, this cost me about 12k dollars, and that included a 70 foot long drive way

this was my first time building a pole barn, after months of research, alot on this site, i designed my own shop, laid it it out on my land and went to work, i did 99% of the work myself with some help from friends and family, i paid 350 dollars to rent a bob cat , well worth it in my opinion, i paid 800 dollars for finish work on all the concrete, 400 for the shop and 400 for the driveway, other than those expenses i did everything else myself, from electrical to installing my overhead doors, i saved all my receipts and have about 12k invested, i got 2 bids from local contractors before i started and they were both in the 20k range.

I also built my own trusses, my grandfather built a garage back in the 60's and he built his own trusses, much like everyone did back then, i used plywood for the gussets, and PL400 glue with galvanized ring shank nails, this saved me 100 dollars per truss x 11 trusses,so about a 1100 dollar savings.

I OVER BUILT this for the area I live in, every barn i looked at around me used 10 foot spacing on poles and 5 ft on trusses, I did 8 ft on poles on the sides and 10 on the back, and 4 ft centers on trusses

Looks good, for some reason pole barns are not very popular in my area of the country.

Most folks put up metal builing now days.

Could you share your plans with us? I could use a building of this size, and I can only find stick built plans locally.

poles are 6x6, 4 ft deep packed in with just the dirt that came out of the holes, as for plans, i didnt have any, i engineered everything on my own, just by looking at others plaans and buildings on the internet

:thumbup:WOW, great job Dan. And I congratulate and commend you on doing it all yourself and with help from family and friends. A true labor of love, I can tell. My wife and I are about to embark on about the same size project (40X36). Problem is most of our friends think they are too old to help and the family live too far away. But I've built two barns in my younger years (62 now) and don't see why we can't get one more before old age sets in.
I may be hittin you up with some questions re how you got the trusses up and braced. So you say it took a year. Was that working mainly on weekends or ??? THAT is a lot of barn for 12 grand. That is a lot of concrete cost in that 12 grand I am sure. What percent was the concrete to the whole project. 25-30% +? You were smart to use rebar. My opinion of reinforcing wire....it usually gets stepped on and ends up in the bottom 1/2" of the concrete. Even done right, the concrete is gonna crack, all the wire does is hold the cracks together. What spacing is the rebar and how thick and what psi is the concrete.

thanks for posting, and I know you said you finished it June 1st. You really believe that? ;)

What part of the world are you in that you can DIY like this without permits, inspections, engineers, soil samples and so on?

Great job, it looks terrific!

I have a friend who had his 30X50 built in the mid 80's for $7500, including concrete floors.....those days are long gone, aren't they?

jagmandave, I live in Amarillo Texas, outside the city limits, NO PERMITS or INSPECTIONS REQUIRED, if you live outside the city limits in Texas you dont have to have permits, can you imagine all the Farmers in this state having to wait on inspections for farm buildings , fences etc? it would never work, And my house is 1 year old, I used quicken loans for my mortgage and had HELL with them on the inspections\permits thing, i almost wasnt able to close my loan, i had to beg a county official to sign a letter stating no permits or inspections required,

BuickFarmer, we had 2, 12 foot ladders and we carried the trusses up and set them on the truss carrier, this building is close to one i saw in Michigan, here in the texas panhandle we do occasionally(Feb2013) get 20 inches of snow, and the wind blows hard here, its actualy worse than chicago, we carried them up in the upright position too, we tried upside down on the first truss and it just seemed easier to carry it up ,right side up. i spent 3k on concrete, and 800 on finish work, so 3800 plus 600 for rebar and wire mesh 4400 of the 12k.the rebar was 16" on center, 1/2 inch rebar, the edge of the slab is 6 inches thick, the rest is 4 inches, i used mesh on the drive way, i was less worried about it, i started this project on august 1st 2012, i had the majority of it finished by spring break, (mid march) it took me a while to save up for the drive way, one reason it took me so long was i paid for everything as i went, i think i ended up with 2k in credit card charges for the whole project and thats on a citi bank simplicity card with 0% for 18 months.
