Are those heaters on each side of your booth along the middle bottom? Also where did you purchase your fan I don't think that I saw that.A great looking shop and lay out that you have there, Thanks.

Yes those are 2 electric baseboard heaters. I put them in there so after something is painted and flashed off, I can turn them on and be able to maintain the temp on that side without having to open up the doors to let heat in from the other side or leave the exhaust fan on to **** heated air through the paint room.

I ordered the fan online from ventdepot.com

you had a few inquiries about the posts. That's the 1st I seen them laminated like that and think it's a great idea. I would think it would be easier to get the short section secured plumb and straight with the others when your only dealing with 1/2 the length of the full 20 footers. I googled morton posts and here is a close up of their laminations secured with stainless fasteners

The opening is 7ft high and 8ft wide. The track I used is 16ft long. I bought the track and kwik frame sides from Menards and the rollers and stops from TSC. TSC also stocks the track. Here's a link to Menards website.

I first attached a 16ft 2x4 to the wall, then lag bolted the track to it.

Here you can see the Kwik frame sides. 2x boards fit perfectly inside them so you just cut your boards to width and slide the sides on and you've got a door frame. I used 2x6's on the top and bottom and 2x4's in the center.

Here mine is with everything framed and 1 side sheet'd

Nice shop and really like the bathroom board use for the booth, should wash down nice to keep down the dust! I hope to build my own shop but need to build mine myself to save a buck! I am still in the repair business and we have been slow.

After a little over a year of planning and the last 7 months of spending every free second I had working on getting it finished, I am glad to see my shop build finally coming to an end.

Got the driveway done yesterday and as you can see the grass I planted around the building about a month ago is coming in very nicely.

Looks awesome! I used the melamine board in my current garage, as well. My only gripe was trying to hold it up by myself, lol. I assume you glued the panels to the OSB?

What was the spacing your posts? 8ft?

And how about the purlins for the roofing, 2x6 on 24" centers??? Trying to figure that one out, I saw a metal plate that looked like it was splicing a purlin.

Posts are on 7 1/2ft centers and as for the purlins I think they are 2x4's if I remember right. I really don't know what the spacing was. Your right about the metal plates, they **** the purlins together and put a plate on each side to join them together.

no worries about blowing snow with that fan outlet?

Yes and heat loss, I'm going to be installing one of these hoods on the outside. I'm planning on making some sort of removable cover that I can attach to it to keep the snow out and some of the heat in hopefully.

Is that a gas heater?

How many BTU's is it?

How good of a job is it doing for yah in the colder weather?

Its propane, 100k. No complaints, I'm happy with it. Easily brings shop up to comfortable temp within 15-20 min when its 10 degrees outside.

Im looking to build basically a clone of yours but 30x40 and was wandering a few things. Whats the size of your finished paint room(I may have overlooked it) and how does the lighting set up do,is it enough or would you of done it different? Got any shots with your back against the work bay door side facing out so I can get a look at the room usable space?
Thanks

It is 14ft wide. The lighting works well, the pics don't really convey how bright it really is. The spacing of the lights in the wall with the doors was a compromise, but overall I'm very happy with the overall setup and its performance. Here's a couple more pics of the inside and one with my F150 supercrew in it to give you an idea of how much room there is.

Finished Morton building is real nice looking. That's a lot of money but having in go up that quickly and still have great quality shows where your money went. With cold Iowa climate and need to keep consistent temperature for paint booth, I'd be curious if you priced out radiant floor heating as that room could have been it's own zone to keep temperature in paint booth whatever you wanted it?

Also, got to ask, why spend $40K on supernice garage, but skimp on air system lines out of plastic, especially since you have a dedicated paint booth?? I'd put in 3/4 inch black pipe and it would never need touched again.

Also, the Modine 100K Btu heater could have instead been a Separated Air unit (I know that Reznor makes one) that draws in clean air from outside when you might have paint fumes in the building. One more way to error on side of safety.

Shop looks great!

I love 1st gen Broncos. My best friend had one while we were in high school, he offered it to me during my first year in college for 400.00, I was broke so I passed, I have regretted it for the last 24 years...

Make sure you keep us updated on the progress:beer:

What about some type of portable light (like a roll-able stand with a 4 bulb florescent)that can be plugged in and placed at the vent door, this way you wouldnt have any dark spots in there. Either way it looks great and good to see your already putting it to good use!

I may have missed it somewhere....is it a 10' sidewall? paint booth is SWEEEEEET!

Yes, 10ft ceilings.

The paint room works better than I ever anticipated. I've seen stuff come out of high $$$ downdrafts that wasn't half as clean as I can get out of my paint room.

Early Bronco I just painted

Your garage/barn is amazing, I'm impressed with your workmanship and attention to detail.
I have been kicking around purchasing a Morton Bldg and you have convinced me that this is the wise choice. YOU ROCK

Love the garage, I'm looking into a 30x40... I know morton's are good but didn't realize they are that pricey. We have a lot of pole barn companies in PA and costs are more reasonable...

I was wondering about you heater. Stills happy with it? I am building a similar building 40x40x14. In your opinion would the 100k btu be fine or would you step up to the 125k?

A few recent pics of how the shop has evolved the past couple years on the inside. Added a lot of new equipment and redone the air lines. The frame & cab in the pictures are a 31 Model A hot rod project I'm just getting started on.

2 of the bigger projects I've built in this shop are my 76 Bronco and a 62 Nova that I just recently finished.

Love the Bronco. The Nova is sweet too. Silver and blue is a nice combo. I'd happily have either/both in my garage...

I know your build was a few years ago, but since I'm about to start a similar build, I really would like to hear if you would do anything different...

I'm waiting on Morton to deliver and erect my 30'x36'... (should be here in less than couple of weeks) and I'm thinking about some similar finishes in the interior: white ribbed metal ceiling and plywood on the walls.

So, how do you like the metal ceiling?

I'm thinking about plywood (sanded & painted) on the first 8'. Then maybe more metal ribbed panelling on the final 4' (I'll have 12' ceilings). Since your last post, have you painted your OSB walls? Would you do anything different on your walls?

I really wanted a paint booth room... but my lot slopes and it was cost prohibitive to orient it as you have yours... i.e. my doors (big door) will be on the narrow end and a paint room just doesn't quite fit in my smaller building, especially with the orientation dictated by my lot... :(

Thanks in advance,
Don

Its been almost 3 years now since mine was put up and I can honestly say I wouldn't do anything different to the layout or interior finish of my shop. It has performed better than every expectation I had going into the project. I really like the metal ceiling and would highly recommend it. I think it looks the best and reflects light very well. I thought about painting the walls in the shop side when I finished the inside, but decided just to leave it natural. I really like the flexibility wood walls offer in being able to hang anything anywhere.

The only thing I wish I would have done different is have made the concrete approach big enough to park a car on in front of the doors, which I plan on having another 12ft poured next spring to the approach to fix that issue.

I was and still am for that matter, very pleased with the job Morton did. They done everything they said they would do and went out of their way to make sure I was happy with the end product and how the jobsite was left after completion.

Went w/ Morton for our 80 x 62...great quality, they use better materials than alot of the "other guys".
