My 36x30 build in Utah

After 10 years in my house the garage has finally risen to the top of the project priority list. The plan is a 36x30 with 10 ft walls, 16x8 and 8x8 doors on the eve side and attic trusses for storage/game room/man cave space. I found plans on the internet and my structural engineer friend modified them to meet city requirements and my specifications. I had gotten quotes from local architects of $1000-$1400 to design and draw up plans, I ended up paying $180 for the plans and $350 to my buddy for the modifications and engineering calculations required by the city.






This is what I've had, flat roof with holes in it, not worth repairing. The rear section had a root cellar below it.

Where we're at today, backfill later this week then pouring the slab on friday. Trusses are 5-6 weeks out, hoping to get walls and a roof up by winter.

A lot of places would make you take out the cellar walls and floor and require "clean" fill. Obviously that adds a lot of $$$

Nice start! I am also in the SLC valley. I noticed your early Bronco in the photos, I had a 1966 Bronco until a few weeks ago. Congrats on the build!

Made some progress this week. Had the flat work done, it's a lot more driveway than we had. Not looking forward to shoveling snow off that thing.

Also got 2 walls up today, only had the morning available so we made good use of the time.

I'd trade shoveling snow for a detached garage any day of the week. Can't wait to see more as it sounds very similar to what I am looking to do. How do you plan to use it? Shop, toys?

Yeah, it'll be more than worth the effort of shoveling snow. I have been dabbling in woodworking building beds for the kids, kitchen table etc. and would like to learn more as I acquire more tools of the trade. Right now I call all of my work "rustic" but would like to be able to start making stuff that looks more polished. I also like to tinker on the bronco and do any repairs/maintenance on the other cars within reason. I hope to get a Max Jax lift in the near future along with a nice air setup, welder etc.

So progress has slowed the last few weeks. On Halloween my wife went into labor 3 weeks early and our little boy was born that evening, they're both doing great.

This is how we left it before going to the hospital.



I've since been able to work on it here and there. This is where it is now minus the framing of the window on the left wall.



Trusses were delivered today and we plan on setting them Saturday morning after finishing the blocking and getting some sheeting up tomorrow.

I see your neighbor has an AC unit in his red brick garage/shed. Are you planning for that?

Your build should be great when you get it finished. I know you want to get it weathertight before the winter.

Thanks everyone, it's been a bit of a readjustment having a baby again as the other kids are 11 and 8.

I would like to have some type of AC and heat eventually. The big push right now is getting it dried in before the weather gets bad.

We got the trusses up in 3 hours with a crane. They didn't bring a spreader bar so we did 2 at a time with straps. Still made good time.




That room above looks so much bigger when you're up there compared to seeing the trusses lying on the ground.

Working on getting the roof sheeted. Only had a few hours this morning but made some progress.



Also had the huge pine tree removed this week. It really opened up the yard.

Yep, better hurry though, I understand we're supposed to get hammered by the end of the week.

Although that could change a hundred times between now and then.

For sure. I call 'em "weather guessers", because half the time it's just a semi-educated guess from one day to the next. Kinda like a stopped clock, it's only right twice a day.
