My 36x48x14.5' Build Thread Lots of Pics!

I stumbled upon garage journal this spring when I first started research different designs for my build and became immediately addicted to it. So thanks everyone for all the awesome ideas and help thus far.

Some background, a few years ago my wife and I bought our first home on 2.5 acres in Middleton Idaho with the grand plan of building a shop. Well i quickly learned that a house can take any and all extra money. Fast forward a few years and a few major projects and I am ready to start my shop.

I have never taken on a project like this myself and initially wanted to pay a contractor but my wife convinced me that I should do this myself as I am too picky about things and would be better off not paying someone and being unhappy about the results. So with the help of youtube I taught myself Sketchup and started designing.

Will try to keep this updated have lots of pictures because if I dont take pictures I forget things haha!

Oops lets try concrete a second time. Right as they were down with the flatwork the owner of company showed up took one look at it and drove a stake through the center and said no go I am taking it out. Wait....what??? He explained that it flash set and I wouldnt be happy with it. So a call to the guy with a skidsteer and the mini were ripping up a brand new wet pad :eyecrazy:

So I ran down to the concrete supply, put more plastic and wire down and waited for them to pour again.

The next time around the crew was double the size and finished in half the time!

With the concrete drama behind me it was time to start framing. Disclaimer here I have never framed in my life but after multiple trips down the road to look at new construction homes I figured what the hell cant be that complicated! Luckily help from a neighbor on occasion and I was able to get it done. I can now understand why they have crews to do this, it takes forever by yourself.

Wall raising day came after I was able to coordinate it with the help of about 10 buddies and lots of beer. Everything went smoothly and the building even squared up, first victory. When I started framing on the ground I was concerned because the walls looked really short, that quickly changed when we go the first section up... 14.5' is a good ways down when your smacking on the top plate. I framed the side walls into two 24' sections because I knew lifting a 48' wall with a bunch of newbies was a bad idea. The headers went up, not very fun but we got them up there.

Next went siding, and where I realized probably the biggest mistake I made on the build. As I was finishing up with the fascia I noticed that I was using 2x6 fascia instead of 2x8 so I did not have the any material hanging down. So come spring time I will pull the gable end fascia off and put up 2x8. Not sure what I am going to do with the sides....

Besides that lingering issue the siding went up fast, had two buddies from work that use to side come over and between the three of us had it done in one weekend. With ample time for beer and pizza I thought that was pretty good!

For the soffits I used Hardi with holes, like the idea of continuous vents.

What you could do, rather than replace the 2X6's with 2X8's, is to buy some 2X2's and then pre-drill them and screw them into the 2X6's to make them 2X8's. That way you don't need to tear anything apart and it would be less expensive. Supposedly you will wrap the wood with aluminum (or cover it with something to avoid having to paint it) so having a "joint" won't pose any issues.

Impressive work! I wish I had the cajones to attempt my garage myself haha. Keep posting pics. I love that you’re getting the dogs in the shots too

Forgive my ignorance, but why didn't you stagger the joints on the siding?

The siding is a TruWood cottage lap, its wood fiber product that can expand and contract. So its installed this way to allow that and the trim boards cover that. At least that’s what I understand. Common stuff around here, not real high end but its what we have on the house, would rather use a Hardi product.

Beautiful building....really like the combination of siding and metal. Colors are sharp too!
