I broke ground today after months of planning and tasks to get a permit.

It is going to be a 40x40 room with a totally open floor plan. 14 foot high walls and an attached 15x27 side room for storage and tools.

I'll try to do updates as it moves along. The project was too big for me so I'm working with a builder.

The plan is to finish the digging and pour the footings on Tomorrow

Finally got some time to post updates on my build after a couple of weeks of craziness

Here is a picture that gives you an idea of where the workshop will sit relative to my house.

The water table is really high where I live so we had to put 100 tons of trap rock into the ground to get a solid place for the footings.

Once I got sign off on the excavation, we were able to pour the footings and walls

After the foundation was poured but still needed to be filled, we got a blizzard with over 2 feet of snow up in New England. It was awesome to hand shovel out over 2 feet of snow from almost 2000 square feet and have to throw it over 6 feet in the air to get it out of the foundation.

It took me three days to get all the snow out of the foundation so they could fill the inside.

I've never had such a crazy workout.

Welcome to Garage Journal :hellobye:

We'll be looking forward to seeing the progress pics. I sure would like to have that dirt that you scraped off. Nothing but clay over this way.

Thanks. I've been lurking on this board for a while collecting ideas. This site is awesome. Finally have something to share.

I have too much top soil and you guys have too much clay. I had to truck off several loads of top soil and ship in loads of fill.

Here are some pictures after it was all back filled.

Hopefully the garge will get framed up this week. Lumber and trusses came in the end of last week

I'm doing one room that is 40x40 with 14 ceilings and engineered trusses that let me have a 14x8 storage above. The other room is 15x27 and it will have a cathedral ceiling.

The builder I'm working with has a 30x30 he built for himself and he wishes he went the extra 10 feet each way.

I'm looking forward to forward to getting it weather tight.
