It started out as a siding project. Then we discovered that carpenter ants took up shop in the gable end of our "contractor special".

Rather than do the repairs and put off the garage, we dove in and attached a 26' x 30' garage. Just barely big enough for the 2 cars and 3 bikes, but more than what we started with :)

I am fortunate to have a lady who apreciates the toys as much a me. She has helped in all of the stages of the project. I must add that it is FAR easier to roof, when someone is lumping the shingles for ya!

We are just now painting the interior and choosing a flooring system. Tiles, epoxy, stain....I'm open for suggestions.

Well here are some of the earlier shots of the project, my helper, and a couple toys.

These shots show the insulation and the near-final results (outside at least)

Thanks to Kevin54 for sharing the secrets to attachments!

Any idea how much more were the 'attic storage ' trusses compared to trusses without this feature? How added cost as a percentage.

I will look up the costs of the attic trusses. They cost more because of the 2x8 & 2x10 construction. However they are rated for light residential, so a bedroom or the like is acceptable.

The company is in Maine called "Wood Structures Inc". They are a great company to work with. As everyone has a horror story of their build, the trusses were mine. I placed them during a VERY rainy June using friends paid with beer and steak tips.

After they were up and the weather broke, 1/2 of each truss broke out with a funky mold. NOT GOOD. However, the company came out and determined that the mositure content was too high and the trusses would ned to be removed. Root cause - a bad batch of wood on 1/2 of the line. NOT GOOD.

Wood Structures replaced the trusses and paid to have a crane come out so I could replace them myself. They also replaced the hardware that holds the trusses in place.
It was a pain for the schedule but they did the right thing with no hassle.

The engineers were easy to work with. I gave them my custom order and we arranged between the phone and fax what I'd need. Lead time was short. Shipping was prompt. I'd use them again in a heart beat.

BTW: You save on attic trusses if you can build 24" on O.C.

My wife will now have an 11'x16' walk in closet off of the bedroom. The rest of the attic is a 19'x16' storage area to keep clutter out of the garage and basement workshop ;-)

I'm not exactly sure of the percentage right now, but installation is the same (though heavier) and you nearly double your real-estate.

Well I can't speak to E-tek's honey. We're not competing, but all I can say is that I'm happy with my help.

Since I bought my house I've had one thing or another torn apart. Not only does she tolerate it, but she helps me with the work. We've insulated the attic after hunting the flying squirrels that were roosting in it. Now I have the ultimate "dude room" complete with a separate bar room. I'll have to post that project on "Attic Mantown Journal":)

While I am still finishing painting of the Garage (and hope to epoxy the floor) I have also found a great price on Trex decking to resurface the deck. I got enough material at $1.50 per foot to build a deck add-on for a future Hot Tub. This of course put me in search of a hot tub which I found on Craig's list. When trying to convince the lil' lady to agree to a hot tub, she announced that she'd buy it for me!!! That was an easy sell. :bounce:

We are finishing the garage, replacing siding, windows, resurfacing the deck, painting the house, kitchen countertops, and eventually plan to...errr....just live here. Maybe she is being nice because I promised the big closet in the Garage loft.

I am setting aside the remainder of the loft for storage. However along the way I've found that it doubles as a make shift photo studio....Note the still unfinished shed made with trusses from the original truss-botch

Did I mention I also like photography ;-)

Finally, The electrical is complete! :bounce: It has been a year last Feb since the rough electrical was done. I didn't think that the electrician was going to remember me (or the circuit) for that matter with all the 3 and 4 way switches!

After some McGiver testing to recall what went where, the job was complete. It gained some 20 amp circuits in the basement for the bench, table saw, radial arm saw, and freezer.

After a year of portable lamps, the place lit up like an operating room! I also have flood lamps out back, A honking florescent light toward the drive, a carriage light to the walk way, and (sniff, sniff) a door opener for the 20 ft monster.

Best yet, the electrician's son has agreed to come back in a week run wire for the hot tub!

Photo time: Please pardon the mess! Tom

I see a couple of Suzukis in the foreground, a v-storm and a GS? Is that a beemer in the back? My computer screen is small and I can't make it out. Nice looking garage you've got there, well done and nice and bright.

I must agree I am Phyched to have lights. More light than I could have imagined.

The bikes are an '03 Suzuki V-strom 1000, a 1978 GS 750, and a '07 Hyosung Avitar.

More paint and stripes next. Then the wall cabinets and schwag.

Still debating on the floor epoxy....

E-tek,

I agree its in good fun!

I saw your page and send my congrats on a great garage, a nice project car collection, and stunning helper

My only current restoration job (besides the house) is the old GS. Not much antique value but plenty of sentimental value as it was my first bike. (unless you count the Suzu water buffalo that wouldn't run)

Hopefully I'll get a rusty old Mopar in there to keep me busy when I run out of projects.

I'll keep the photos coming as the job progresses.

Looks like you're into bikes - and babes! A fine combination!! I have some of the same type of photo's of the wife (lingerie, bikini's) - but I haven't uploaded to photobucket as yet - no real need - until now!

I wasn't into Mopars until I scored a Challenger - but the Mopar community is a strong one and it's easy to get caried away! I like any brand of car, but certain models just speak to me.

Looking forward to see your build's finish!!

Well the garage is effectively a mess again. Before finishing the painting and stripes on the wall, I started another project (always my downfall :lol_hitti

I was going to resurface my deck and that ended up meaning- I built a new deck and ran a 240v line and put in a hot tub. Well at least I can relax after finally paint the rest of the garage.:bounce:

I bought Vinyl racing stripes for the wall and now I'm looking for wall schwag to give the garage some personality.

Pix soon to follow.....I'm hoping to officially christen the garage in October.

Looking at your helper and garage really makes me want to be home and get my garage cleaned up and organzied so my helper can help me with my photo hobby. Nice garage and helper.

My helper brings me a drink when she thinks I need it and food. Wonder how she will be after I get home after dealing with all the house stuff for the last six months.
