A while back I posted about the drop of rail a retired railroad machinist gifted to me.... It was rough to say the least.

Finally got her finished. 14" long, Blanchard Ground, painted, and weighs in at about 35 pounds.

Today I stumbled across another free drop from a local acquaintance. 34" long, weighs about 85 pounds.

Probably just gonna hit it with a brush cup, dunk it in oil and put it away until I figure out what I'm gonna do with it...

I saw one years ago that was about 3ft long. Somehow the guy had machined the horn to taper down to about a 1/2in point. The horn was all of 2/3rds the total length, mostly round like it had been turned down in a lathe. Couldn't work out how the hell he managed to hold it off-center in a lathe to do that though. If I figure it out, I intend to make a replica one day. Base was only about 10in long & the web between the top & base was curved like mine:

I believe you are thinking of Thermite welding.

That is truly a work of art! that took time,and a good eye.top piece looks thicker than normal,and the sides also,someone added metal or machined a piece and added it on?to the flange by welding underneath or a fusion,u can fuse that rail together on the ends,forget the name of the process,but have seen it done between the rails to fix a broken rail,but never underneath,but?Maybe Hiball chime in on it? Too thick on top not to be modified somehow

Yea, I recently saw one that a guy took a bunch of leaf springs and cut them down, stacked them up, then drew a bunch of beads all the way around em and welded em down with a 7018. Then he took a grinder and cleaned it all up so it looked seamless. It was pretty cool!

Yep, that's it.

I really want to see that done in person. I saw a video of some Ukrainian railroad maintenance guys doing it. Then they used a "portable" track grinder to clean it up.

It was pretty damn cool!
