I've had a cheap "outside" vice in a work area behind my garage for years. It's been great for welding, fabrication, working on my Jeeps, etc. It's been on a makeshift stand and I finally decided I needed something better.

I started with a pile of scraps that I had in my "metal shed" (kind of like a wood shed). The main piece is a tool stand that I built back in the '80s. The base is a expired brake rotor from an MGA.

I started by cutting a piece of 1/4" plate using my steel circular saw to form part of the platform.

Here is the platform that the metal pail now sits on.

Here is the cheapie vice. I have several Record vices. They all get to stay in doors. I bought this vice back in the '80s. Most people complain about them but to be honest this one has served me well. I NEVER thought I'd rebuild it one day. It came apart in less than 3 minutes and was easy to reassemble. It's an IMA vice which I think is Asian for ... "I'm a vice". :headscrat

Here it is starting to come together. The pail has been bolted to the platform and filled with concrete to weigh it down. This stand with the vice on it is HEAVY! I set seven 14" ABS tubes in the pail for tool storage. I sealed the bottom of the tubes and then poured the concrete to lock everything in place. The tubes also allow the concrete to be located more to the rear of the stand which helps with weight balance.

Here is the final product. I'm not sure this cheap old vice warrants being paint red but I am sure the gloss won't last long. I cut about 10" out of the tool stand in the first photo and welded it back together to form the post. I also inverted it and the vice now sits on the old 11" MGA rotor perfectly.

Very nice!! I have been thinking about a outdoor vice and I like the design of your stand. Did you drill holes in the bucket below the tool holders to let water out?

PC: i love your new (old) vise (vice) stand and the rehab on the old import vise.

just curious if you made a typo in your description of the PVC tubes for your hammers and tools. did you mean to say 7 instead of 6 or is the picture an optical illusion? :dunno:

how heavy is the stand without the vise or a approximate weight is close enough?

Thanks. I thought of adding drain holes but didn't. When I say "outside" it's actually under a porch roof so I'm not too concerned about water getting in.

Ooops! I originally had 6 but added one just before I poured the concrete. Thanks for catching that ... I'll make the edit. They're actually ABS tubes not PVC. I figured the PVC air line guys here wouldn't go for that.

I'm not sure about the overall weight. The vice would be about 80 or 90 lbs. and the stand might be that again. It was a ****** to move it to where it sits now. It won't be going far now that it's there.
