I have been lurking here for a while getting ideas and figured I should post my current project. I have a 20 x 48 pole barn that was build way back when. It has been been home to many animals. It has a very nice concrete floor. I decided to remove the hay loft to move the ceiling up to 11ft height from finished floor. This is where I am in the renovation. I am planning on removing and replacing some of the windows. The door needs to be replaced to make it more air tight. I am not going to be putting in garage doors as I am going to be using this as a small shop. It already has electric and water there.

Looks like it has been "cared for" and it sounds like you have a big part of that 
I see many around my area which have decrepit roofs or visible holes in the roof, and I say its merely a matter of time...on the other hand, some people have gotten others and restored them nicely.
What sort of work do you plan on doing there?

I am planning on making it heated and cooled for my sign shop ect.. I did have to get up there and seal around the cupola and have one other small leak to find. There where 6x6 post holding up the center of the hay loft that had rotted out due to it being a kennel that was washed down every day for over 15 years.

When living out in the country, it's a good idea to install good fitting exterior doors that help keep rodents out of the shop. If left to breed, they can become a real destructive problem.
I am open to suggestions as I am thinking of putting in a 8 foot wide x 16 room above the ceiling for a play area game room for my boys. do you think the double 2x8x16 glued and screwed will be strong enough for this? I should say these are on 24inch centers as well. I just don't want a post in the middle of the shop.

I'm not an engineer, but that would make me nervous.

I used one old one glued and screwed to the new some of the old ones were sagging when I took them out. I used clamp to take the sag out and put the sag turned up. it is hard to say what the old ones where made of. I get a little bit of deflection when I put my weight on one.
