Let me start by saying that when I am trying to do something 1. I hate paying people to do something I can do (most likely better). And 2. I research this stuff for hours on end and spend so many of my hours it would have been cheaper just to hire it done.

Now with that being said I finally decided to buy a Reznor udas 175k btu unit heater for my shop, this only took maybe 2 months of research to decide on. I have read every manual and piece of literature thru at least 2 times about this specific heater.

My question is how do I figure out what size gas (propane) line I need to supply this thing. Lets just say its going to be 50ft max with 3 90s in it.

I have over taxed myself with this and I cant figure it out. The inlet of the heater is 1/2 and I have thought that I need 1/2 to damn near 2" supply pipe. I know the wc and the gravity numbers.

Please help

Is this just a general rule of thumb or based off a table?

Educational guesstimate. If the valve has 1/2" inlet and it's 175K btu, 1/2" would almost certainly work at over twice the energy density of NG. When I worked for an HVAC outfit, we did new installs all the time with 1/2" drops from a 1" trunk line for 180K btu furnaces burning NG. Going with 3/4" would make absolutely certain the pipe wouldn't be a restriction even on a long run.

At my last shop location all I did was call the propane company and they came out and looked at what I had and told me what line to use. I ended up just letting them run it and hook it up, it was cheaper than my doing it myself.
