My budget-built and improvised garage

EDIT: New updates and photos at the end, 2 December 2018

With a limited budget and other limitations, I've spend the past several years trying to set up my garage to be as useful as possible, all while doing it on the lowest possible budget (since spending on the garage means less spending on the cars).

This pretty much started from scratch as previous houses were all townhomes with no garage. I had a good selection of hand tools, but very little else.

Another limitation: half of the 2-bay garage had to stay available for my wife to park her vehicle in at all times (currently a Toyota 4Runner), so essentially I had a single bay to work with, which had to both hold all of my tools, cabinets, and workbenches and still have room to pull one of my smaller cars into for long-term work (Triumph GT6 and BMW e30). Also needed to still have room to (barely) fit my daily driver in a pinch (e.g. major hail storm or something)...Plus some space has to be left for kids toys, bikes, etc.

Another limitation: the garage is under two bedrooms, so the ceiling is not terribly high (9-foot or so).

A bonus: in my backyard I have a "shed" that is a single and a 1/4 bay on its own, but it is wood-floor on stilts and not good for use as a "shop" as only my smallest car (the triumph) can actually get to it due to choke point between the house, trees, and fence at the property line. But it's useful to stash the GT6 in the winter, and to store large parts (spare car panels, engines, etc), and hold all the lawn/garden stuff to keep it out of the main garage.

The main garage is a constant project....usually little things to accomodate a new tool or machine, or shelves, or found some old kitchen cabinets, or whatever. I can weld, but I like to build out of wood since it can be reconfigured or taken down easily if need be, and its frankly just easier to do things with wood for me, as a former carpenter's assistant many years ago :)

Anyhow, just some pics. I've lurked here for a while, usually drooling, but figured I might as well actually join and post up....

A few years ago I did get a quick blurb in Classic Motorsports magazine in their "garage" issue, though it was across the page from a very nice custom setup and a bit embarrassing in comparison

workbench, etc. My main bench is an old music studio sound table. very heavy, very stout. I build a rollout bench underneath it that now has a big stainless sheet on it (formerly in an industrial kitchen and acquired for free...)

anyhow, that's my intro. Someday I'll hopefully talk the wife into giving me the whole garage (yeah, not likely).......the other plan is to pour a slab under the "shed" out back and run power/insulation/etc to it and turn it into a full workshop - but that's going to be a while down the road if it happens.

I like the way the glass jars are hanging in tiers so that you can have more then one row. I am going to try that.

How are they gripped? It the lid fixed or have you got something going into the grove between the lid and the body so you can take the jar down with the lid still on it?

With a 5 year old and a 1 year old, I have no shortage of baby jars for sure. I've added the "tiers" on as I accrued more jars over the past couple years.

The lids are just screwed into the wood with two screws (so they don't rotate), though I have thought about a more elegant way to do it that would allow me to take the lid off on the car. This was an old trick my grandfather had in his garage for decades and it has helped me organize all my little stuff rather than just having it in big drawers, since I don't have room in here for a big stand-up "clear drawer" case.

Very goog use of space. Any more pics of the E30?

I have a build thread for it on Grassroots and on r3vlimited. Here's a link. Probably 500+ pics of it in that thread (or of little detail stuff)...

http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/fo...-my-318i-rallycross-build-thread/40440/page1/

quick specs: '85 318i with M42 swap, Modified H&R Sport/Bilsteins with spacers, 325i rear suspension/brakes, 3.91 LSD, e36 steering rack, mostly gutted interior/rollbar/etc, m3 top hats and LCA bushings. Street/track wheels are euroweaves w/Star Specs, rallycross wheels are stock bottlecaps with Yokohama rally tires. Finished 3rd in class last season, currently tied for 1st this season.

Here's a couple fairly recent photos, and you can also look up my username on youtube and there are some vids and such.

That brings up space in the garage. Here are some shots of how much (or little ) room I have in the garage (earlier iterations) with the e30 in it all winter being "built" and with my GT6 in there being "rebuilt"

Too funny, I was reading that issue of Classic Motorsports this morning, found it at the bottom of the magazine pile in the bathroom...

That's a full well used garage. I wish I had the space you do though! (I'm in a 16'x24')

hah, I wish I had the space too. Usually there's a 4Runner in the right side (wife's) so in practice I really have about 12'x22' for "my stuff" (in addition to the shed out back).

I've been trying for years to get her to park outside and let me have the whole thing, but no dice so far :(

here's one for you....with the e28 who rallycrosses with us (at the time of picture, he was changing a shredded tire).

Thanks for the photo. I sold mine 2 days ago though, don't miss it yet but I know I will.

There is a large following of E30s here in Portugal, with vert examples trading hands at E46 prices. Never had one and never will, but they are cool cars.

Looks like a great use of space there. What's your plans?

The only near-ish-future plan I have is to do the floors. I'm leaning toward tile, but haven't really decided yet. The thought of moving everything to do it (and cost) is the sticking point. All of my upper shelves are held up by 6x6 lumber which would have to be cut/jacked up to get tile in there. We'll see.

Also plan to finish the shed out back (thicker plywood floors, insulation, drywall on the walls, power, etc) and make it a shop for working on things that aren't physically "on" the cars. But again that's a slow-build, long-term plan for when budget allows.

In the near future I may be adding some machines as my uncle is selling his farm and he has 50 years worth of metalworking and woodworking gear and about 1000 tons of scrap metal, old cars, etc. Packrat. He already gave me a small air compressor and I plan to buy a drill press and bandsaw from his stash at very least, plus one of the dozens of argon welding tanks he has sitting around.

Took a couple pics of some other "features" so to say:

Roll-away workbench (the top is a stainless counter from an industrial kitchen....found in said uncle's scrapheap) that I built to fit under the main workbench.

DSCF5696.jpg

here's the "loft" for storing smaller stuff. Covers about 1/3 of one bay, diagonally. Set up to hold the car's roof rack and other things..

DSCF5701.jpg

also hang our SUV's cargo box, hanging above the hood of the truck when it's parked.

DSCF5700.jpg

and....a lousy night shot from a few minutes ago, since it's clean-ish for once..

it's funny....I always said "what's the big deal with e30s" for years, in the meantime owning various Nissans and Subarus for my racing/autocross. Then I got the e30 and it's been such a joy to work on (in both ease and cost) that I really don't even want to touch my WRX or Triumph anymore....I just want another e30 to make into a track toy.

Verts here are overpriced too....IDK why. e30 verts are no fun, limp noodles...

Some little stuff as a side-project today when working on the car. Years ago the ski shop I worked at was tossing out some of our workbench hutches, and I grabbed them and they've been sitting in my shed ever since. Today I pulled them out, assembled the upper sections, and mounted them on an old floor dolly I cut apart. Now I have a "bridge" table/shelf that just fits over the GT6 and can be rolled where I want it. For the next month or two it will be used to hold all the parts from the M42 engine I'm rebuilding, so the parts don't get mixed up with other stuff on my other workbenches

Hey Josh! I was searching GJ a few weeks ago figuring you already had a garage build thread going.

Glad to see you started one. Your space is certainly a devotion to organization!

Hah, what's up man! I remember being inspired by your place back in the day when I was still in the townhouse, and we had "mod meets" up at your place.

With a new car project underway and some new needs, I made some arrangement changes to the setup - keeping in mind that I still am only able to use half the garage, for the most part. Some of my additions

Under construction with car still in there, lol

DSCF7389.jpg

Utility sink (in front of my "wife's" bay. Plumbed down into the basement. Luckily the drain and water lines were right on the other side of the wall since our basement is split-level with where the garage is. Also built a little shelf for cleaning gear, etc.

already pretty dirty. Was able to scrub a BMW 4-cylinder M42 block in the sink :)

IMG_0030.jpg

Made a new workbench using the above-mentioned steel top (I still have the roll-under bench, but now it's just plywood. It doesn't get much use anyhow). This is now my "clean" bench (though it doesn't much look like it).

DSCF7409.jpg

DSCF7394.jpg

New swing-away computer shelf for the clean bench

DSCF7406.jpg

And some new corner shelving. The old shelves just turned into deep, dark caves that collected junk to be forgotten about.

IMG_0031.jpg

Moved the toolchest to a better location, and the cabinet that used to be there I moved to the garage centerline since it doesn't need to be near the workbenches (it's mostly paint, solvents, etc).

IMG_0034.jpg

Then built a centerline shelf for smaller stuff. Out of the way, two 16' 2x4s and some closet shelving...

DSCF7763.jpg

IMG_0036.jpg

And built my daughters a little garage nook of their own. Mostly self-serving to get all their sports stuff/toys/etc out of my way, but whatever :)

So I know everyone on this forum has been waiting with baited breath for me to post more updates to my totally-awesome garage, lol....so on this Easter holiday I will provide you all with such an update, since I took a break from working on the racecars, the trailer, and the tow rig on this nice weekend and did some garage work.

So the guy I got some of my other cabinets from is finally re-doing the REST of his kitchen, which means more secondhand, ugly 40-year-old cabinets for me....

I decided to tackle the "other side" of the garage. This side was previously just a bunch of crappy home depot shelves and random **** sitting against the wall, since my wife used to park her car there. Now that we have the Sequoia, it's a very tight fit and she has finally ceded the fact that it's a hassle to park in the garage (all of my running cars park outside and always have, I might mention). So time to make this side of the garage more useful.

So a few old cabinets (repainted black), about $20 in lumber and materials, and a bit of creativity and here's what we have now, which tucks away my hoist and press nicely, and gives me more tool storage. Wish I had some before pics, but it was so lousy that I never took a pic of that side of the garage before, lol...

DSCF3260.jpg

DSCF3258.jpg

DSCF3257.jpg

now I just need to get the girls to organize "their" garage...they have more vehicles than I do!

DSCF3261.jpg

Also in preparation for expanding the side fence to fit the new trailer, I took down the old front/gate section and dug holes for the new posts (covered by the big pavers right now so no small children fall in them). I'll go pick up materials next weekend. This new size should fit both the big car hauler and the small rallycross tire-trailer nicely.

Some updated pics. I've added airlines from my small compressor, changed a few shelves around, and a few other little things. Nothing too drastic

You have my favorite garage in this whole joint.

Best creative and affordable use of space and still a "family" garage.

Well done.

Many thanks for the complement. Just like my (also relatively cheap) cars, I try to put a lot of thought (and way too much sweat) into the details of things to do them in a compact and inexpensive way that still lets me use the space :) And I love this forum because it gives me ideas, so I hope that something or other I come up with will be useful to someone else.

Only 18 more years or so until my girls are out of college. THEN I can actually invest in some real toys, haha.

After cleaning/organizing all day today, I was laughing about what a hollow victory it really was to have it all "clean" again, since I had no time left to actually work on any of the cars today....

And every time I look at pics of the space, it continues annoy me that I haven't done anything about the floor yet, and how terrible it looks. And the irony of the fact that the more stuff I add to the periphery of the garage, the more of a pain in the **** it's going to be when I finally get around to doing the floor :p

I've lived in apartments for 11 of the last 12 years. Now I've got the space, but not the tools. I still can't get a project car for another couple years. I don't give a fat damn about my floor, I want a car (who are we kidding, a couple of them) sitting on it. Someday.

I think I like that your space isn't antiseptic looking. It's evolved in increments instead of starting with a blank space and developing a "theme". Not knocking it, but I'm not into it.

If you've ever seen the documentary "I Like Killing Flies", your space, spaces I like and want to work in, remind me of the old Shopsin's kitchen.

trust me, I've been over your thread more than once and taken a few of your ideas for inspiration. And every time I'm in there I'm jealous of your ceiling fans ....which I would love to do if I had much open ceiling space :)

I am lucky in that I don't have to keep any of my yard stuff in the main garage. It's all dumped (relatively) haphazardly in the single-bay in the backyard, surrounding the GT6 that is now in long-term storage there. I'm not sure how I'd fit all that stuff in this garage if that wasn't the case :headscrat

true, I feel your pain. I had a few townhouses before this where the "tool area" was the basement and the cars were parked parallel on the street in front. So car work (on daily drivers, didn't have any projects then) involved lugging everything up stairs, out the door, and to the curb. I had a lot less tools back then. Starting to work on old cars and racing really caused me to buy a lot of things that I wouldn't otherwise have (engine hoist, drill press, etc). But I look for deals (machine shops going out of business or moving always want to sell off heavy, old stuff - how I got my vintage drill press for pennies on the dollar), and Harbor Freight Super Coupons are, of course, my friend. And they certainly take up space, haha....

As to the floors, the thing I really don't like about them is how much moisture they absorb on humid summer days, and that porosity (is that a word?) also seems to soak up all kinds of oil and grease, making it hard to clean up messes. I really just want something that is easier to clean up, and maybe something a bit lighter since this garage is fairly dark sometimes.

my townhouse basement "garage area" just over 10 years ago, haha...

So a few minor updates, though none too exciting...

I've been furiously cleaning all day since for the last 3 weeks I"ve been doing sanding/bodywork on the car so there's dust and **** everywhere, and needed to clean all that up.

IMG_20140921_213434664-1.jpg

My wife has been doing crafty stuff to make some extra money, so I gave her my roll-away workbench to use (and built a little shelf on it for her stuff), and built a small shelf above to hold the wood she's using for her projects.

IMG_20140921_213555442.jpg

In the meantime, with the rollaway not under the main bench, it has become more tire and wheel storage for another track set and some snow tires for the e30. Ugh...too many tires and wheels in here!

IMG_20140921_213626141-1.jpg

also made a few small changes on the side to fit more stuff in. Nothing too exciting..

IMG_20140921_213754105.jpg

chillin at night

IMG_20140921_213730325-1.jpg

and in case you're interested, the e21 is coming along. Lots of bodywork and sanding done, and I just dropped the M42 engine in for a test-fit.

Josh, glad to see you are making progress on your project!

Do you think you have enough room for another set of wheels?? (I thought I had a ton of idle wheels laying around!)

Great space man.
