Edited 7 October to add pictures/updated progress.

Just found the site through another member and  love it. I'm in the middle of a detached 32Wx28D shop. I'm doing this on a (USAF) StaffSgt budget so I have to do the work myself or I couldnt afford it. Aside from putting the shingles on, finishing the concrete and some help from by brother in law on the electrical I've done the work myself. Its a turndown slab 18"to22" around the perimeter and 5"avg depth across the center.

Breaking ground
garagegroundbreaking.jpg

A couple weeks later. The forms were a PITA to get set and squared but it worked out. Less than 1/2" out of square when all was done

Standing up the walls was fun by myself too. On the front with the top heavy garage headers a buddy did stop by to help me stand them up(thank goodness)
0830081950.jpg

Got it in the dry at last. Still have some trim work on the LBL and have to cut in the 2 upstairs windows.
roofon.jpg

Its going to have 15' ceilings on the left bay for a lift in the future. The bay on the right will have an upstairs area for watching TV, beerdrinking, hiding out, strippers...
Since this pic was taken I've reworked the stairs a bit but you get the idea.
loft2.jpg

The large 4 foot opening in the wall is going to be a (piano) hinged door with latches on the OUTSIDE of it that can be opened for moving large objects upstairs like a recliner, couch, stripper pole etc ;)

loft.jpg

Looking down the stairs
stairs.jpg

The bay on the right has 7'10" ceiling height. Plans are for a full bathroom in the back corner.
bay2.jpg

The left bay and the 15' ceilings. Dont have all my OSB on yet here.
bay1.jpg

I've made alot of progress since these pics were taken and I'll post some up in the next day or two. I am a much better mechanic and and even better military policeman than I am a carpenter so I've made plenty of mistakes but so far I think its come along well. I'll be asking for input at times if you guys dont mind.

Edit: the last pic you can clearly see my miscalculations in the wall and the walls are 16"oc while the roof is 24"oc 2x8s. 8/12pitch.

What was your time frame from start to where your at now? I see a lot of green grass, are you one of the lucky ones that live in warm climate? Your build looks great keep bringing photos!

Thanks for serving, Buck!

I think the build looks great. Of course there's going to be some mistakes, even the pros aren't immune to them. I've been gathering info on garage builds, but I haven't tried one yet, and I'm certainly no carpenter, but it looks to me like you're right on target for a super nice garage. Also, not bad scenery and land I might add! I'm looking forward to more pics as you finish it up.

Here are some pics from today.

The left bay looking outwards. I have some of my race rubber stacked in the corner.
0113091749.jpg

The same bay, just turn 180deg. Thats a recliner under the plastic thats going upstairs when I get it done. This is the bay with 15 foot ceilings that I plan to have lift in the future and do most of my work here.
0113091749a.jpg

The same bay. I have 1 ovf my tool boxes moved down at least.
0113091749b.jpg

In the same bay still, looking right, towards the other half. You can see where the floor stops for the upstairs. The rails worked out perfect to attach to the floor at the right height along with the door springs. Thats extra storage in the far corner.
0113091750.jpg

The right bay looking back.
0113091750a.jpg

The same bay from a different angle. The stairs are directly to my right from where I took this pic.
0113091750b.jpg

Same bay still, here is the entry door. All the electrical is in the corner. Internet, cable tv, network, water...it all comes in here. I have 100A service btw.
0113091751a.jpg

Stairs.
0113091751b.jpg

This will be a finished room with all my guy stuff. Military stuff and racing trophies goes here...along with strippers and beer ;)
0113091752.jpg

These are some temporary bridges I made with some extra 2x10s to gain access to the upstairs over the left bay. My brother in law calls them 'bridges of death'.
0113091753.jpg

I started in August, hence the green grass in the first pics. Not much else is different on the outside other than windows, house wrap, a little bit of gravel for the driveway and some mud.

Funny you should mention that :spit:
I spent a few year in the Civil Engineering squadron before crosstraining to military police. My commander knows this. When we moved into a new building there was alot of work left to do...guess who got tasked :wtf:
Pulling cat5, drywall, hanging 52"monitors, building a wall or two, building a fence around our backup generator.....I could go on. I'm gonna have a badge for my tac vest made up that says

A worthy title, regardless of the task. Seems like every unit has a "go to" guy for such things and it it always an honorable position.
Thanks for your service and keep up the good work

Been a while since I posted but I have been busy with work. I got a bit of progress to report. Siding is going on little by little, by me of course. This is my first time working with vynil siding. Got my buddy to come over and give me a 30 minute lesson and off I went. Its going slow but I'm taking my time. I actually have the front completed now including the soffit. I'll try to get more pics tomorrow but heres how its looking.

Holy old thread batman.

I just got back from my (Iraq)deployment in August. I'll be adding a few more pics in the days to come. I've since poured the first 10 yards of the driveway, finished the siding and am doing finish work on the inside. This has been a big project for me to do by myself but a lot of fun.

I thank you for your service. Kind of cool you just jumped back into building when you get back, I guess you gotta keep busy with the free time. Great Job.

Here is the first pour on my driveway. It was 10 yards and is 26' wide. I had enough saved up to do the entire driveway but 12 days after I got back from Iraq my home heat pump went out. Guess where my driveway money went :(
I had a little left over so I decided to go ahead and at least pour the pad in front and cut in my driveway. The rest of the drive way is just gravel right now till I save up some more $$.

I need to get some pics of the inside up now that I have my room upstairs about %90 sheetrocked.

Took a few pics yesterday. Progress is slow but its still progress. I hope to have the upstairs finished by Thanksgiving.

The pad in front has been poured. I used 10 yards, fiber and lots of wire. I tied it into the pad for the garage with 1/2" rebar spaced every 18". Average depth is about 5"
1006101618.jpg

I still have a long way to go. I figure it will be another 20 yards of conrete. I had enough $$ to pour it all but wouldnt you know it... Two weeks after getting home from Iraq my heat pump went out. I can still use this for the time being.
1006101617a.jpg

This is my bonus room upstairs. Its only 13 x 18 but I figure I can put a computer, tv and a recliner in there just fine. Maybe a fridge for beer. I hate sheetrock work BTW.
1006101613.jpg

More sheetrock work.
1006101613a.jpg

To be able to get large items into the upstairs room I put in these doors. Its much easier to move a recliner or anything else large through these doors. Its also how I was able to get full 4x8 pieces of sheetrock upstairs. I have locks on the outside so that they can not be opened from the inside by anyone (like kids) and present a danger of falling. You can also see that the room is insulated. I hope it helps with sound as well as heat/cold. The entire garage is insulated as well. I did this with the hope that I can use the small window unit AC for the upstairs.
1006101617.jpg

I have most of my tools and 'stuff' down here now. I stil need to organize.
1006101615.jpg

This bay is my primary working bay. It has 15' ceilings for (hopefully) a lift in the future. The other bay has the room on top and therefore only has 7.5' ceilings.

How is the room on top coming along? My 'upstairs' is still a blank canvas. I have room for either a small store room or a bathroom, and then a good sized room which I don't have any particular plans for yet. I will have an office in the house, and there is a computer / clean work area in the main garage, so I don't need it for that.

Your plans sound great!

Have you just returned from another posting abroad? Hope it went well if you have.

:)

Gareth, No recent deployments for me. I've only been back for about 7 or 8 months anyways so it'll be a while before I go on another (I hope). I've been concentrating on the downstairs as of late. Mostly getting a lift and prepping for the concrete driveway. I've done a little upstairs and all the sheetrock is up but not yet painted and I still have bare floors. I'd like to have it done really soon but work keeps me so busy its hard to find time.
