Just realized I've been scouring the site for helpful info and hadn't started a build thread.

IMG_20140407_175659.jpg

Pinned out. Going with a pre-engineered steel building. 30' x 60' with 16' eaves. 2-12' wide bay doors on the far end of the shop, 1 of them 10' tall the other 14' tall. The front 20' will be enclosed and will have a 2nd short floor above (6' tall) for storage. A full bath will be included between the two spaces.

I wish they would have left the keys so I could play a while *@#$:D

Many many many loads of dirt later, 440 yrds to be specific. :wtf:

A few days later my concrete guy got to forming up the monolithic slab.

From this point the weather was an un-cooperative PITA. THings came to a screeching halt for quite a while.

Got the plumbing roughed in after a while.

Tied into the pump grinder for the house.

WP_20140521_005.jpg

Slab wrapped, rebarred, and wired. You'll notice a center footer for added strenght and a footer 20' in. That's where the structure for the second floor storage will be.

imagejpeg_2_3.jpg

Thanks to the many rain delays the building arrived before the slab got poured.

Once again I lost quite a few days to rain, which was getting rather annoying by this point.

THe weather showed a clear saturday so we jumped on the opportunity.

I went with a line pump to save $ over the boom pump. It worked but the finishers hated it. Way to slow a pump rate. After the footers were pumped and roughly 2/3 rds of the slab was poured we could tailgate

After this got set for a couple days I was able to go ahead and seal the slab. That was a lot bigger a job than I expected. Wore me the heck out.

Great looking start to a wonderful shop. Nice planning, you left plenty of space to the left and right for phase 2 and 3

We've been scraping pennies away for a while and have the space. The wife wanted to go 30x100 but the budget doesn't allow it (yet :D).

Someone mentioned expanding at a later date. Keep in mind that your building was not designed to expand. The end walls cannot be removed or modified.
That does not mean you can't expand. You can build another building next to it and tie them together. You can't share the end wall with another building.

Absolutely correct but you can add covered patios etc. That's what I mean in regards to expansion.

Not much progress over the last two days. The rain has been rolling in and out. Erector did get one of the man doors installed and the base around the slab.

Its amazing how much bigger it looks with the frame up. Any particular reason you put the door on the long side? When I built my 24'x32' pole barn I had all kinds of advice and ended up putting it on the width end which I like but if it was bigger and wider two doors would have been better for me.

Just looking for everyones thinking on this for the next time.

A multitude of reasons for it's placement. I should mention that there will be another man door in between the short roll door and the column to the left of it. The first bay will be enclosed with a second tier above for storage and eventually HVAC etc.

So I realized earlier today that I'm an idiot.

I didn't have a plumbing plan design by a pro. I got a plumber out that I use at work and we figured out the rough in layout on site. Looking at the slab with the frame up I realize my shower drain location is way off. I set it out for a 32x32 one piece shower unit. I didn't account for the tension cables to be in that section so I've lost 6" of space.

Is there anyway to avoid breaking up concrete and moving the drain?

Aside from an elaborate tile shower...

Uh-oh!! I knew things were going to get serious when I saw that Case sitting there. I really hope that you locked that door. You don't want someone breaking into the place!! :D

Have a lull in the erection of the building.

I picked up my windows for the building over the weekend. Was originally only going to put in 4-6 but I decided to go with 10. Windows are 3030 vinyl single-hung double-pane argon filled by Ply Gem. Not a terrible price

I will have a window centered on each side of the man door you see in pictures below.

On the side walls I'll have two windows on the lowest girt approx 4' in from the corner. Also I'll have on the top girt two windows approx 3' out from center. The upper windows should add some needed natural light in the day time.

Rough layout, not to scale.
window%2520layout.jpg

Windows and last man door will go in over the weekend, or Monday at latest. The exterior will go on after that and then the insulation and roll doors go in. If all goes well I'll have a completed shell by the end of next week. :bounce:

Things got rolling again today after the long holiday weekend.

WP_20140707_001.jpg

If the weather cooperates, all the windows and exterior sheathing should be up by the end of the week. :D

Inside of the first 20' bay(windows surrounding man door) will be framed and enclosed. The remainder will be left exposed for the time being. I will, when funds allow, sheet the remaining area with either ply of some type or perhaps white metal panels. Not sure yet.

Looks good!

What is the shop layout going to be? Are you going to have the 20ft section separated by a full wall, and keep it as a smaller workshop/office/relax area, with storage above and the working area with the doors?

Full wall with the intent of a storage area above. The 20' will be finished, along with the bathroom, including central heat/air. We've got a pool table waiting to go in it, will eventually build a bar, tv etc. Generally a party/hangout spot.

Remained will be open shop space for me. Gotta get a motorcycle lift in there, mount my tire changer, and eventually a 2 post lift.

Roll doors went in last monday. Nothing exciting to see there. Steel guy going to work on my punch list this weekend. Nothing major just some odds and ends.

I'm gathering all my materials for electrical tomorrow. May get started on outlet layout, mounting boxes, drilling girters etc. Have a couple buddies coming saturday to get the electrical all finished up. (or at least finished until the inspector comes to tell me what we missed  )

Got the building wired up this weekend. Took a buddy (apprentice electrician) and myself half a day Friday, full day Saturday and about 2 hrs this morning to get everything up and done.

My hands are absolutely thrashed. More cuts and scrapes than I can count. I'm wore out like nobody's business. Kudos to those of you who do this kind of work 5 days a week.

The shop side. Light fixtures are 6 bulb fixtures. Closer view
WP_20140727_001.jpg

Fans claim 20,000 cfm air movement from each. I'm skeptical of the claim but we'll see. They are all on a reversible speed controller.

Should provide enough light...

View from the other side of the area that will eventually be closed in and have storage above. Only 3- 8' 4 bulb fixtures here.

Passed inspection and have power company lined up to get the underground installed on Tuesday :rocker:

Power company showed up a day early. Had a couple loose connections to track down, but all else was well otherwise.

The 6 bulb fixtures are bright as all get out. Just what I was looking for. Should do the trick pretty well.

LED exteriors with photo-cells give just enough light output.

Long delay since last update. I got into the interior build out. The plan is to have a finished room in the first 20' bay and a bath the takes up some space in the 2nd bay. Additionally i'll be left with storage space above.

and a fast forward to all floor decking above, kneewall to contain storage area and staircase.

Next steps are to rough in plumbing, hvac, and electrical. I'm waiting on the quote and details for the HVAC, I don't know near enough to do that myself. Will likely be a 1.5 ton heat pump.

I'll be starting plumbing next weekend. I do have some questions I need help with regarding plumbing. Specifically venting the drain system.

I would rather not have a 16' 3" stack pipe going up through roof. I contemplated turning the 3" stack 90 degrees and punching out through back wall. Then turn it 90 back to vertical and extend it up strapped to the wall. Likely put some kind of mesh over it to minimize leaves and whatnot dropping into it. Is that turn going to be a problem?

I spoke with a plumber I know who offered another suggestion. He said if it were his, he would extend the vents to the second tier out of eye site and use Studor air inlet valves. I planned to use one on the sink drain that is on the left side of the building, but not for the large stack.

Any thoughts on venting completely with studor valves?
