Warning to those with big, impressive garages; You are not allowed to view this thread. Please leave now.

Last week I started building my garage workshop. I needed it to be both mechanic and woodworking capable, and with only a 12' x 12' space, it was a little tougher than I thought it would be. I started with bare studs, no wires, nothing. Well, here it is.

Step 1 - Wiring and starting on drywall

Step 2 - Drywall complete. Now onto my least favorite part

Step 3 - Mud and tape. The whole time I had to keep telling myself "It looks ok... it's only a garage"

Step 4 - Painting complete. Onto the build!

Step 5 - I managed to get 1"x6"x48" pieces of pine from Menards for $.49 each, so I decided to go that route for the bench top.

Step 6 - One section of bench built and mounted... temporarily

Step 7 - "L" corner built

Step 8 - Bench completed, except for the varnish, which I couldn't get a good picture of.

Finally, this is how she sits right now.

Wall mounted Campbell Hausfeld air compressor is mounted to the left of the tool chest. I'll see if I can get some better pictures, as these are all cell phone pics. Hope some of you enjoyed. Thanks for looking!

Looking good, stupid question. Did you add insulation? Just asking.:D

I did not. The rest of the garage is, and will continue to be un-insulated and un-drywalled, so I didn't really see the purpose of doing so. I did consider it, however.

Looking good. Here's an idea, jump up and down on the workbench. Do you have enough support. I beat on my workbench all the time. I find myself clamping stuff down on the front lip also. Just suggestions, you might not need these depending on what your working on. Here's picture of mineView media item 10148 Its got a 1-1/8 plywood sub flooring top.

The whole work surface can more than support my weigh, plus some. I've had over 400lbs on it at one time. I was pretty impressed!

I like that metal frame you made. That is waaayyyy too heavy duty for what I need.

Two questions:

Do you plan on rolling the WB around a lot? If so, I think the wheels should be bigger...the little ones get hung up on small objects on the floor

Second, if you don't plan on rolling it around how do you keep it from moving around when using it? Won't it tend to roll around a bit with the wheels (despite the size)?

Looks great, so far. My only change would be to add more support under the longer of the two benches. You don't want to span that much with a 2x4, in my opinion.

I like the corner treatment with those planks. That's something you'll get to appreciate every time you use it.

It's got locks on all four casters. Most of the time it will be against the wall. My welder's casters are smaller cast iron unit and they're a pain. Not a lot of people refer to it as the couv.

Sorry, but i had to look.

I moved from my 12 x 20 that housed a full size car a bench a wooden shelving unit and tons of ****. I basically had to turn side ways to get by the car to get to the bench. That was with no room on the right side of the garage. It was basically unusable space.

Im 49 and still in the process of finishing a 28 x 38. Your garage is only as impressive as you make it out to be. I think your "little" shop is already quite impressive. You have enough installed outlets to serve you, you made nice usable space with the stereo and bench. The bench has nice area underneath to maybe insert some metal cabinets and if at the right height can help add additional support if you need it.

Add a nice heavy duty vise on the end of the bench near the tool box. Get a piece of 1/4" plate to reinforce the vise underneath the bench.

Keep up with the good work and the pics.

Looks great! One question though, how do you turn the stereo on/off? LOL good to get it up and out of the way to leave you room to add more peg board etc. Welcome to GJ.

Hey all. I know it's been a while since I've posted, but I thought I'd update my build thread with a few more pictures.

I used DFA's ideas to make a rolling workbench out of materials that I was comfortable with; wood. I used a piece of edge glued oak that I found in an abandoned warehouse. I sanded it just enough to let the raw wood peek through the grey weathered wood, stained it, and mounted it on a frame. I love the way it looks.
