Weve already been through this....this will be a metal shop....built like a home...then converted back into a dedicated shop...

Now that that is clear, when this does become a dedicated shop, i will start another build thread, which shows the progress from home to shop........very nice shop...but still a shop

-30x40
-10' walls
-2 12x8 doors, drive through style
-6 3x4 windows
-1 3x3 window over kitchen sink
------------------------------------------------------------
2 bed/1 bath portined off from the building
rest of the space will be all open
-full stainless kitchen
-50 gallon water heater
-Central air conditioning to the entire building
-Heat in the central unit only to the bedrooms and bathroom
-9 burner propane 60k BTU Infrared Enerco heater in the open area (overkill, but it was on sale :D )
-------------------------------------------------------------
When the home gets coverted to a dedicated shop the bathroom will remain for obvious reasons

-My sons room will be converted into a locked tool room, complete with laminate wood flooring

-My old room will be converted into my office, comple with big comfy easy chair, desk, and satellite TV, aslo with laminate wood flooring

-The kitchen will remain, why take it out ya know...beer to be kept cold, snacks to need to be heated up, and hands need to be washed, plus the oven will make for a nice powdercoating oven!

-Stained concrete will remain on the kitchen and living room side to act as a showroom and football watching area/ BS'ing area/ Benchracing/ Mavericks watching area....simply a man cave area

-The other side of the building will have an epoxy floor with the full compliment of cabinets and two motorcycle/ATV lifts

-I work on ATVs and motorcycles so it will suit me fine

On with the pics...

No gravel, no plastic under that huge pour? What's gonna keep ground moisture from seeping up through the concrete? Did you termite-proof the area under the concrete before pouring?

the part out front with no barrier is just an apron, it will not be part of the shop the main shop has plastic, i dont know about gravel, i had it done, im not building the shell of the shop, just the inside. He is under contract with the state of texas, he pours slabs for government buildings, i didnt get short changed, the reason i dont now if there is gravel...one day it was nothing but forms...the next night it was poured...he works fast

But, most slabs around here do not have gravel...i dunno...not a pro...all i know is the guy is good and he did an excellent job

Looking at the pictures, you don't have gravel. It would have gone in before the forms and rebar.

Did they at least compact the native soil before pouring the slab? If not you might run into problems down the road with settlement. If you were north, I'd guarantee frost heave in the first year.

Just curious, how long did the slab cure before the steel started going up? Reason I ask is that the concrete will crack unless it gets some time to cure - we usually make guys wait 7 days from pour to first wheeled traffic or start of structural members.

Slab cured for 2 weeks, had thanksgiving holiday to help out with that!

They did compact the soil, i will say the black land soil we have here is like concrete when its compacted...i knew it got hard when packed but you could knock on this stuff man...pretty cool

Ordered the metal for the exterior today, the main color is called light stone, really light tan, and it will be trimmed in forest green with the same green on the roof, cap it off with white doors.

Also went to the depot today and picked up a half-lite steel door 32" wide, got the door and lockset for $220, i was quoted $250 for a full steel door but i wanted something more home-like...plus it will add light!

The earth in Texas is harder than compacted gravel anywhere else.

Maybe thats why they do it that way in Texas.

sure does hurt when you take a fall from an atv accident... ouch

Is it hard enough to do a burn out on? The soil up here is full of clay. when its wet its slicker that wet ice but when dry its as hard a concrete. I've done a burn out on it with my dually, left rubber and did not dig up the soil.

Very cool! Looks like you work long hours as each time you show up it's dark! Good idea to pour the slab and the apron together - that'll be a good spot to unload and work with all the materials!

Thank you e-tek! I get off work at 5:30...by the time I drive ALL the way out there it is dark...only about 18 miles but traffic is not so good for this small of a town. There was no sense in pouring the main slab seperate times from the apron or vice versa...if the concrete guy is there....do em both...get it over with! And it is nice to have a place to put materials!

I took off work today to drive my son to his dentist 50 miles away...and on my way back into town I stopped by the build site! Wood framing is DONE! Windows are in...all they are waiting on is for the wind to quit blowing...cant hang sheet iron in this wind we have had!

Me and the wife were eating at Popeyes today and before I went back to work we ran over the the Attwoods farm and ranch store, hanging from the ex K-mart ceiling was a 4.5 foot rustic texas star...ive seen this star before...it was $80....but today there was a big PINK sign that said CLEARANCE...and $18.77...i told them I would take all they had...only had one..so i took it! Should look nice on the side of my new place!

UPDATE!:

Door is in

Walls are up

Roof is on

Last window is in

Only one wall to go!

New pics will be uploaded monday morning before 8am CST!

Place looks great guys, I still feel like a D.A....the only reason I didnt build this myself is because I dont have a gas or diesel powered ARC welder....When I build my house my loan will consist of enough for the concrete slab and a new welder, I will handle the rest.

Specs of the shop--

-Steel frame (4x4 square corners)
- 3 10" I beam trusses
- Purlin for cieling, interior room joists
-Wood studded walls for interior rooms
-wood studded walls for kitchen wall in open area
-wood studded walls for living room wall
-the rest is all metal

Window locations turned out great it was my first time at blueprinting of a building and I have to say I did a pretty decent job mainly

-no mistakes
-everything is where I expected
-size is on que

And to think my geometry teacher in HS (who lives across the farm road) told me in school that I would never be able to design plans to scale amd **** like that!

HA! look across the road woman!

I cant wait to show off some actual interior progress pics!

The guys who have done metal buildings all their lives don't play around. They came and had my frame up in about 2 hrs. Next day sheeted the whole thing in like 4hrs with a father, son, and wife team. Awesome!

ATVmech - Wow, nice building. Sure am glad you stuck it out with us cranky bastards after the less-than-warm welcome ya got!!!:bounce: (No offense to you cranky bastards:bowdown:)

Nice view for sure. And I like the windows - good size. Are you still planning the same for the insides? How much do you think you'll get done over Xmas? Looks like you can work through winter there.

Best of luck and keep the pics coming!

Electric meter is getting set today....pulling cable through underground conduit SOON...next up..

-1 more wall...30' long

-wiring....should get that done in a day, sure is good to have an electrician as a friend, it goes so much quicker

Would like some suggestions on lighting on the overhead door side....and remember, brighter is better...but im not looking to spend a ton on lighting over on that side. I was thinking 1 8" fluorescent between each of the purlings ????
