Hello. I started this project a couple of years ago. Doing everything myself, mostly, it's taken time. But this is where I am now. I wanted to share as I have used several ideas from this forum. So thanks for the info.

It's far from done but it's covered and sealed, electrical is done and ready for inspection. Ceilings and heater are next, then insulation and walls.

I'll post some more pics later. Currently using my phone.

I guess some details are in order...

It's 62x40, 10x14 ohd, steel standing seem roof and exposed screw steel siding. It's a pole barn style but I added osb sheathing all around and on roof. 4" floating slab and 12' walls. I have a 30' radiant tube heater using propane. 100 amp service and will have plenty of LED lighting. Ask for info not listed.

Mainly anything high up on a ladder. Tool belt weighed about 50 lbs. at times and also climbing a ladder, w/tool belt, and hauling a 4x8 sheet of osb 15 ft. up and trying to keep it from falling with one hand while getting tools with the other hand. Only really had one close call with material and one with me. I was also up and down a ladder probably 4 times as much as if I had help or a lift.

My main issue was renting stuff. It wasnt really an option as I have a 9-5, kids, hockey and other things that required time. If you rent something, you need to make the best of the time while paying for it. I was not able to do that so I had to invent ways to get things done without rental equipment. I built a slide for getting the OSB on the roof. It worked well but it was very manual labor. I did have some help those two days, luckily, but we were both spent for a few days following.

And time, doing everything, it took a lot more time than I thought. In the time it took me to get where it is now, they built an entire house and garage on the lot next door to me.

So, let me say this, I did have help with a few things. Setting the posts, pouring/finishing slab and roof trusses. Via hockey, I know a contractor and he helped me with these things. These are the bigs that I didnt want to screw up. EVERYTHING else, I did on my own with the occasional hand...roof sheathing and my son helped with a few tall pieces of steel.

Again, rental eq. Im not renting a lift to apply ceiling panels, so I build an 8x8 platform with a material stand so I can do this at my leisure and by myself, safely. Its on wheels so its easy to move and I built it with existing materials. Only paid for the casters. $50.

I put one piece up and I'll be refining the design a bit but for the most part, it verks.

Thanks.

Electrical inspection was Tuesday. Passed without issue.

On to the ceiling. Put one row up yesterday. Even with the "scaffolding" I built, Its tough work. Also found out that a couple of my trusses are not 24 oc. Grrr. I marked them so I know when to expect a cut. Need to get a bit past half way so I can get my heater up there.

Ok, some updates. I have the ceiling done and the heater installed and... heating. Im in the middle of insulating the attic. I made an attic door at a point where I had a 4x4 panel that luckily enough, happened to be directly over where my storage loft will be. I assembled a couple of Lowes industrial shelves and scored a couple of tool chests for the use of my trailer when a friend moves. I love to barter.

I also started 'going through' all my parts bins and parts in the garage to get things ready for moving. I will have a few boxes of parts to give to friends and some for street view. Scratching my head as to why I kept so many little pieces of this and that. I guess at the time it seemed like a keeper. At least I'll get organized and minimized... for now.

After looking at several of the builds in this forum, my stuff is so basic its funny. The only thing I can say about mine is I built it and its mine. Im still working on it so it will get 'better' but Im doing everything myself, meaning without help, so it takes longer as Im not a young man anymore.

Started the insulation in the attic....wow, half done and Im whooped. I'll take a day off and get it finished tomorrow.

After getting my tools and equipment moved in, I'll start on the loft. Nothing special but will need a place to store overflow. I may jump on a small project or two in the between time. Need some fun while on vacation.

Looks great! Is the early fastback under cover a project in waiting? Congrats on keeping after things. Looking forward to following along.

Looks very nice- there is a lot to be said for doing it yourself. Can't wait to see how it progresses.

Its a customers 67 GTA. Its just out of the way for the boss right now. We are doing the same customers 68 CJ car and just had 2 other projects come in that will be ahead of the 67. I guess my place is his overflow spot for now.

The other 2 are mine.

Not much progress as of late. Been coaching hockey and doing some needed car/truck maintenance as well as a laundry room remodel. Starting to get the loft corner going. Insulation in and putting up wall panels. Going with 7/16 OSB that will get painted white. Once the loft is done I can get a bunch of **** out of the way to start finishing up the insulation and walls. I also have to get the basement garage on the house cleaned out to start the home gym project. Never a dull moment.

Great looking space. What kind of long term plans do you have? Like are you planning on framing in any rooms or doing some kind of “dream” build?

It's tough to use GJ sometimes. So many people with so much skill, dedication and talent. Budgets range from absolute minimum to super-frugal to average Joe to very deep pockets with long arms.

It is your project, and you have the satisfaction of knowing you built it! That's a big part of any journey and a huge source of pride. I'm planning my own detached garage and I'll be doing it largely on my own (with a ton of inspiration drawn from this place). There is nothing funny about your place; its looking awesome and I have no doubt it'll finish that way too!

Are they ever really finished? :dunno:

The only thing Im adding is a loft, or storage platform. Im going to build it like a deck, 4 posts, but it will attach to 2 walls in a corner. I have the insulation and wall panels up in that corner but still need to paint and retrieve the posts. I have all the framing wood already.

No dream build, just a space for standard projects. I will be rebuilding the race motor in my Mustang and starting a 7.3L diesel rebuild, once the weather breaks. (need to extract the engine from the 250 chassis its in, sitting outside)

Thanks. When people stop by and ask "who built it"... and I tell them I did, they look up, why up I dont know, and say wow. I am quite proud of it. Never built something like this and I knew I would have to do this myself if it was to be a reality. Im sorry my dad didnt get to see it happen but I know he had confidence in me when I told him my plans. On some level I like to think he was there holding the ladder for me some days.

Im in the home stretch, complete insulation/walls/paint, hang air lines and then just the little stuff that shops get over time. Once the air lines are installed, I need to get ******* on some projects as mentioned above post. Theres also summer projects that will need attention. I'll get some pics posted later today showing the 'corner' where the loft will be.

Here here! Cannot agree with this enough. My neighbors last names are not Jones and if they were, I still wouldn’t worry about keeping up with them. Enjoy your space for your purposes. It’s a great shop and many would kill to have that much sq ft! Congratulations on a wonderful spot you have there!

Just read your thread, congratulations on a wonderful looking build. Being in the same camp as you are, my wife Pat and I did almost all of the building of our home and shop so I can appreciate what it took for you to get it to this point. I have also come to the conclusion that a shop is never really done but just in stages of completion. Keep up the great work,
Jim.

Congrats on your shop build. Nothing like doing it yourself and it looks great.
I am jealous of that huge shop! Hope you spend many enjoyable hours in that place...

Loft corner painted. Geez, that OSB drinks the paint. I guess I need to seal it first or something.

Loft build starts today after "sleep from home" is done.
