Very cool!If it works,great!

Two things come to mind....not that it has an awful lot to do with you?

Go to a "pro" indoor range.Ask to see if they'll give you a quick tour of their facility. The reason to say that is 'cause,I did a bunch of display cabmets at an indoor range........their traps and vent system was "enlightening".

Next is a bit esoteric....oh well?Google-foo,"Olympic Running Boar competition".Get past the whole calibre thing(usta be large bore)....its an air rifle discipline now.Computer generated...true random starts/speeds...and watch the guys participating. Its freak'n amazing.

Looks like you push the Ercoupe out of the way and start banging away!!!!!!! I would block the door however so no one can get in.

I have an old Sears-J C Higgins .22 bullet trap that I have used off and on since I was a teenager. Put a lot of rounds into it in my parents basement. Used it some in my shop, made a temporary backstop from two or three sheets of OSB in front of several bales of hay. Don't think I've ever missed the trap however.

Outers used to market an identical trap, I guess they no longer do. Here are a couple on MidwayUSA that both seem identical but different brands.

Back the target up with cardboard, as the lead splatter will eat up a target in two or three shots.

I use old 1940 pattern USMC targets designed for .22's with five bulls, however you can download and print targets from MidwayUSA also.

Free PISTOL target download PDF file.

Free RIFLE target download four bull, PDF file.

.22 bullet traps.

Good call on the Ercoupe. I just finished the annual today.
The back of the trap is 1/2 " with 4" 0f sand in the bottom to stop the lead. I learned to cut the cardboard the full size of the opening so the rounds dont kick out lead and sand. we shoot up to 50 caliber black powder and any pistol round .I think it will take anything but armor piercing. The trap is backed up by 4 4'x8' sheets of osb , my insulated hangar wall and a brick wall going into my garage. The rule is ....If you miss the trap ,you go to the range for a while and learn to shoot before coming back . It will take full auto but they tend to "climb" so you have to short burst.
We use a sign on the steel door but it is to be replaced with a red light.

You could use a 3-way switch to switch between the red light over the door, and the overhead light that lights up your target.

Sounds like a great idea. Thanks.

The only drawback is that everytime I pull out a drawer ,box , or tool I find a brass case with it.

Myself and friends really enjoy it. It is so heavy that I had to weld a chain to the back to lift it with .
I use a tea strainer of kitty litter scoop to clean the bullets out of the sand, most are as flat as tin foil.

I too am curious as to what caliber is being used? I have some swinging "lolly pop" targets that are 1/8" steel that are supposed to be for rimfire. My .17 HMR rimfire will almost completely penetrate the steel :headscrat:! I guess a .17 HMR is not your average rimfire!

The steel in this trap is thick ,real thick. The angle is what really lessens the ability to penatrate. You basically have a richoche each time.
You can hear gunfire on the outside of the hangar....a .45 sounds like a nail gun. Anyone wanting to come in just bangs on the side or comes in the door on the other end.
