My cabinet, workbench and floor project on the cheap..MORE UPDATES.

well, I finally got the new garage built and have finally got to do my cabinets, workbench and floor. I did this for what I think was a great price(minus the toolbox)
First, I found 12 steelcase office cubical cabinets on ebay locally for $85 but I only used 6 for the project. I then welded a mounting brace to the back of each. I then had paint matched to the mac toolbox and painted them(cost of $120 for the paint.) So I ended up with basically $200 in the cabinets, and as a bonus they all inclded the under cabinet lights.
For the workbench, I bought 6 sets of shelving(i cant remember the name brand, edsel or something) when they had them at sears marked down from $80 the $35(it might have been $39) per box. I used 3 of the boxes for the workbenchs and then painted one half of one set blue(which is on the top of the toolbox for my tv).
Countertops cost me $220 from lowes after 10% coupon.
The flooring I found on craigslist and I got 720 sq ft.(not enough to do my whole floor so when you enter the overhead door there is still 9ft of concrete before getting on the floor which worked out great becasue i keep the bikes and stuff there when they are dirty) of it plus about 30 boxes of the edging for $650. I did all the baseboard in the garage with the edging to match the floor. It is the trafficmaster brand that home depot used to carry.
The pneumatic motorcycle lift and pepsi machine(not shown) I got as a package deal from a friend when he closed his motorcycle shop for $400 for the pair and then had the lift powder coating to make it look new. That was done by another friend for $50.
I think it came out pretty good for the price I paid...... still more to do though!!!!

I am interested in the mounting you used for those cabinets on the wall.
Since they originally use slot track in cubicle walls, what did you use to fasten them to the wall?
Do the doors slide up over the tops? If so, do you find this limits your use of the space above?

i" try to put up somee bigger pics tonight. as far as the mounting, I cut off the hooks flush with the back and then cut 1/4" x 4" metal to fit across the back. The steel from the hooks is thick. I then welded the sheet to that metal and tack welded the sheet across the top of the cabinet. The door slide up inside the cabinet, not above them so there is no problem with space above. I think i have some photos from back when i was doing them so i will see if i can find them and post them. They are great cabinets if you can find them cheap becasue they are usually fairly expensive. I also have all of them keyed alike so i dont have to mess with 6 different keys.

I own a collision shop so painting the cabinets wasnt a problem. I just scuff sanded them, shot them with an epoxy sealer and the sprayed them with single stage urethane which I had matched to the mac toolbox.

some more pics............the shelving I took and bolted all together to make one solid unit. I had to cut 3/4 osb to make the top flush so I could mount the countertop.

Thats awsome! I did the exact same thing last march. I used the same cabinets that you did. I got them from my work for FREE! They were putting new cubicals in and were going to through them away.

BogBoar,
Great Job! like the cubicle cabs. Had a chance to get some myself for cheap, but didn't have your insight into the possibilities!

How does that life work? Any Pictures with a bike on it?

hey all, sorry I havent been on in a while, got busy with work and kids.
I really like you setup with the black also. that is the color I was going to go until my mac man offered me the blue macsimizer at a huge discount.

I really like the lift. I leave my race bike on it most of the time with it in the air. I can spin it any direction needed and I usually keep my boys quads underneath. I will try and get more pics soon. I pmd everyone who had sent one, so if you didnt get a reply get back to me.
