It only took me 48 hrs to realize I have to mount it.

Did some security today. I mounted a webcam so it can look through the garage window. There have been some minor crimes in the area, and I do tend to leave my jeep unprotected. I'm using dropcam. It is surprising good at night.

Whoa, this post is exactly what I want to do, and you're local! Hello from Springfield!

If you don't mind, I've got some local jurisdiction/permit questions. Was your carport just a slab or did yours have actual foundation under those half brick walls? How did the permit process go, did you deal with Falls Church City or Fairfax County?

It looks great and I'm definitely following this thread.

Sorry for the delay in responding. Everything you see with brick was existing. There was a slab, and I had to dig out a little to show the inspector that the footings were correct. He didn't seem to look too closely. Overall the process wasn't bad, except I had to move some electrical. I am in fairfax county. One thing about fairfax, the inspection process is pretty good. Easy to schedule.

Fairfax county has a typical carport enclosure plan. I just used that, so I didn't have to submit drawings.

It has been awhile since I have posted. Mainly because I took a break from building to enjoy the rest of the summer. One thing that I needed to do was close in the window from the now garage to the dining room. I didn't want to rip out the frame and Sheetrock on the inside, so I decided to convert the window into a shelf / glass cabinet.

This was the window. I forgot to take a good before pic, and this is all I have.

I built a shelf that actually surrounds the casing and protrudes through the wall.

So you just covered the window with that shelf? That's pretty neat and good since it is easy to remove if the new owners want the window back.

The window had to go because of the building code. You are not permitted to have a window between a living space and the garage. I framed, sheet rocked, and peg boarded the garage side.

Here is a pic form a few weeks ago

Started doing the insulation today. Not fun. I took a break to take some day shots of the door and how it works with the house. It's still untainted, but caulked.

I now have a two car garage. I designed the nose of my car to slide under my workbench, and i just built a parking hump to keep me from hitting the wall. It's not ideal, but it works.

So after three years with the conversion, I'm moving. Now someone else can enjoy it. I just purchased a new house with a two car garage. However.... There isn't a workshop. So it all begins again. Come September there will be a 24' x 12' dream workshop shed build. More pics to come...

Congrats! I never saw this thread back when you started it. Just gave it a read through, really nice job. I think the ROI in converting that space will really be noticed now that you are selling your house.

Best of luck with the move, and I can't wait to see your new shop go up!

Hope your new place ends up as nice as the old one! Your new backyard looks a lot like mine in terms of topography. I've got about an 8x10 shed in that spot that I'd love to someday run power to.
