My Cornwell Experience

Proto makes an excellent impact socket, and they're less money than Cornwell.

I would venture to say most things Proto makes are better than Cornwell.

If you aren't a professional, why spend all the money to have "Cornwell" sockets that are of questionable quality (according to some who have posted), when you can get high quality for cheaper off of Ebay or other sources?

$725.93 for the Cornwell on "Sale"?????

He said he has a good dealer ... I would imagine that's important to the guy no matter what so if the sockets need to be warrantied then it won't be a problem.

Damn, I would assume to just buy 2 whole sets for that price if I was worried about breaking sockets!

I'm going to buy some Impact Sockets next and a few other things and I noticed that some of you said you didn't like them. Those of you who said that, are you professionals? I am not and won't use them every day, maybe not even every week.

I broke a Cornwell 14mm mid length impact socket on a badly rounded wheel bearing bolt in a Chevy truck,it split right in half using it on a 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor which was on a 1/2 drive breaker bar and I am a pro.The 2 13mm impact swivels were used on my IR2115TI taking out bolts holding on a mount off a 4t60e transmission.I sent them back to Cornwell getting them replaced and then replaced them both with a Matco impact swivel that has held up better.Another was a 15mm mid length socket too,split right in half including a 15mm and 13mm shallow impact sockets

Their impact sockets are extremely thick and only broached about a half inch (not a good thing). I use them every day, so those are two pretty important factors when I'm looking at impact sockets. They are also extremely soft, which not using every day, you will never have a problem with, mine will no longer stay on an impact and are loose feeling on a fastener. It's good that you have a good driver, good dealers are sometimes few and far between for all brands. I had a fantastic cornwell dealer for a while and have a lot of cornwell tools. Unfortunately, I feel there are better choices out there, both in price and quality. Most of my cornwell stuff is at home now, tool box included. Except for all the hex and torx sockets I've broken, the tools will hold up just fine for occasional use, its just the little details about most of their hardline tools that have turned me off.

Great.............the only Cornwell tools I own are the master Torx set. I was really thrilled when they showed up made in Taiwan; my fault for assuming they would be USA.

I bought that same set strictly for at home. I didn't know they were taiwanese when I ordered them. I don't mind paying a premium price, but I didn't receive a premium product for that price. I was torn between VIM's and the cornwells, hindsight 20/20, I should have got VIM's. Finish on the cornwells is quite cheap looking too. Turned a 6mm hex into a twizzler and broke a t-35 the first time I used either, and I rarely break tools.

Definitely so, the guy actually comes to my house which is were my shop is. You really can't get much better service than that!

Thanks Matt! I'm sure they will lol.

Now guys, don't get me wrong, I would love to have that Epiq box that Matt has, but me not being a professional plays a big part in that. I used Snap-On during my Vo-Tech days and I loved the tools, but I did break some of their chrome sockets, and no I wasn't using them wrong. I'm coming from mostly Craftsman and very few Proto tools, and I like the Cornwell better. Plus my dealer is a really cool guy.

LOL I was beginning to think I was the only one that broke the **** out of those bits. Too bad as its a very convenient set.


I was also looking at some of my more used cornwell sockets the other day, the only ones I have are 1/4" deep SAE and metric and they all have most of the chrome flaked off by now, gave up warrantying them. Several of them are also so badly worn they no longer fit fasteners. Not cracked, just worn.

Don't have a cornwell guy anymore so I'll be upgrading the bits to snapon and the sockets to matco.

You did get the VIMs. Cornwell hex/torx/bit drivers are rebadged VIM from Taiwan.

I have the master torx set......rebadged VMI. The finish ***** on them and the bits that I have used are twisting prematurely. FWIW, I don't use them on power tools.

I also have a Cornwell multimeter that resembles something from HF.

Honestly, I don't think I will roll the dice on any more Cornwell tools unless I can fondle them first. When I bought the Cornwell items I assumed they would be top quality coming from a truck brand, but that was me being ignorant. Now, the only truck brand products I buy sight unseen are Snap On as I have never been disapointed by them. I also buy a lot of Proto tools as I have never received a sub-par Proto tool.

The Cornwell I have is very good. I like their hardline tools a lot. I shy away from the import stuff.

How about the pretty *** chrome on these wrenches. Even on crappy cell phone pictures they still look good. These wrenches are flawless. No tool marks, perfect polishing and chrome.

I saw the Cornwell truck turn to the Nissan dealer on the street all our dealers are on in Indianapolis. This was Monday or Tuesday IIRC he picks and chooses his shops like all the dealers in my area. Hell there are two snap on guys and one will have a shop and the shop next door will be the other drivers territory...strange.

So the trucks exist but not very easy to buy from. Probably seen more jackalopes in my life than Cornwell trucks.
