My Cornwell JR72?

I recently bought Cornwell JR72 and it does not seem as smooth as a 72t ratchet should. The ratcheting action(back swing?) is a lot tougher than say my Kobalt 72t ratchet. So did I get a dud or is there something I can do? Or is it just made this way? It seems tough as nails. It is also louder than any other ratchet I own. I really dont care about that but I just wanted to ask. I have already put it through some pretty tough duty and it seems 'STRONGER" than any other ratchet in my box

You need to take it apart and lube it. Use a good light grease like Permatex synthetic brake caliper lube. Permatex red assembly lube 81950 is another option.

I'm a Cornwell dealer.

Take a pocket screwdriver and pop off the retaining clip and take the back off.

Put 3-4 heavy drops of air tool oil in it and reassemble. Put a socket on it and spin it 100 times or so each direction. This will seat the gears into each other pretty good.

It gets better with use.

The reason its louder is because the gears are wider than any other ratchet that you probally have and it has 11 teeth makin contact in both directions compared to snap on's 7 teeth on their 80 series.

Thats good info. I passed on them when they first came out because I didn't like the excessive back drag. 12 dual 80's later... :D

Anybody else on here actually have a JR72?

Some ratchets come from the factory with hardly any lubrication in a sealed ratchet. Opend in up, clean it, lubricate...

I take one for demo and do it. A week later spinning it all day it's like butter after everything seats in.

when the jr72 came out I gave it a spin and i was not impressed by first feel. ratchet looked good and all but the lazy spinning action really lost my interest.

I've got one, and it was really stiff at first, I took the cover off and added some oil, it made it a little better but still really stiff. I've had it a few months now and it's gotten a lot smoother, but it still don't come close to my buttery smooth JR30. It's a good ratchet for tight bolts and tight spaces though.

Yea I have a JR40 and that thing is so smooth. I love the feel of the Cornwell Ratchets and would probably buy a couple more if my Cornwell pusher would put some more on his truck

UM yea!!! I have yet to even see a ratchet with the handle on it in person. Or even a flex head. Or a screwdriver set or a ratcheting screwdriver. I have bought many things from him but I am a impulse buyer and if there is nothing to impulse buy I cant. He is a great guy but new to the tool game so maybe he is just getting ramped up. My snap on guys truck on the other hand is packed from top to bottom. I have a hard time getting off that truck without tools.

I feel like a fricken idiot for having to ask this but is there any secret to putting the retainer spring that holds the cover plate back onto these ratchets???? I'm pretty sure the gear and pawl are seated properly. I just can't get the clip to hook in under the lip of the body of the ratchet. Grrrrrrr......

**edit** figured it out. One of the 2 springs that puts tension on the pawl somehow wasn't set right and the pawl was up just enough to push the plate up so that I couldn't get the clip in. Superlubed, re-assembled and smoother than smooth.

Believe it or not, there's a Cornwell dealer in Maine that lubes up his 30 tooth ratchets with Permatex brake caliper lube BEFORE he's sells the ratchets. It's a very low viscosity green colored grease. I got one of his ratchets. It's a JRF36 and it runs smooooooooooooooooooooooooooth. :)

I don't doubt it. I have never tried that. I always have air tool oil on the truck and lube them up with it when I sell them.

I like those blue bungee cords; they're much prettier than the common black ones.

So I heard that the long handled flex ratchets had come out and I called my dealer and ordered one. Big Sigh....its on back order. The non-handled one he has (all chrome) and it feels nice. Thinking about fitting a hard handle to one of those because it won't soak up grease and get squishy feeling. Several of my co-workers Snap-On ratchets with the comfort grip have done just that. Man does that feel icky to hold.

Anyone got ideas for a hard handle to use for this? Or a thread showing this. I thought there was a thread on people doing just this.

I don't know what you would use for the handle, our handles are not designed to be replaced like snap on are. If I have someone break a handle, they get a new screwdriver complete.

I had an issue with my brand new 1/2 28" long flex ratchet in black, I got it and it was bone dry and sounded awful so I took it apart and tried super lube it was too thick the Paul would stick to the gear so I cleaned it all off best I could and it still did it so I tried my tried and most loved ratchet lube Lucas assembly lube same deal happened finally tried just Lucas oil fishing reel lube and it eventually started to work right after turning a bunch. I have one big complaint about this ratchet I have the 72t 1/4 and it has dual plungers and springs under the pawl this is what led me to buy into this style cornwell.

The pawl and gear is larger than any other new style pro ratchet and I have all of the big "4" ,the more surface area the more the strength....well on the 1/2 there is only 1 plunger and spring ands it's week so using the lube I normally do doesn't work like it does in the matco ratchets of the same design also noticed with the 1/2 the pawl and gear is not really any bigger like on the 1/4 and I somehow feel that this ratchet is weaker than any other 1/2 I own.

The 1 flimsy spring is so weak feeling I think the ratchet could skip and what is the little flat metal shim under the pawl for its useless and the 1/4 does not have this. I wonder why Cornwell don't put double plungers in the 1/2 it makes way more since than putting them in 1/4 or 3/8. I do love the whiney black finish but the comfort grips is odd feeling but I only paid $70 shipped for this ratchet and it hasn't even had a socket it on it yet so for the price I'm pleased and it's a whole head length longer than my snap on version and it's so much heavier but don't know if that's a good thing or not but the steel feels strong it don't flex like the snap on.

I'm worried about snapping the drive off on this thing as a repair kit is $45 plus tax and maybe shipping, that's nuts but I will not warranty something I bought second hand Sorry a boy the book guys didn't mean to type so much my apologies.
