My double barrel stove build

I decided I wanted a wood burner in my new pole barn. Thought about a propane torpedo heater but too worried about condensation as the barn is completely insulated.

I got two free barrels from a friend.

The lower barrel will be where the fire is with the chimney passing through the upper barrel to capture as much heat as possible before exiting.

I put three 6" stove pipes in the upper barrel and will put a fan behind the stove to blow hot air through the barn.

Pipes are in, need to weld it tomorrow and then put the door and stacking kit on.

Interesting, I've never seen one done like that with several holes.

Got the door and leg kit installed. Started brazing the tubes. Should be done tomorrow and ready for the first fire to burn off the paint.

All done, burn off the paint and then paint with high temp paint.

Ive built a single. They need a little more air than the stock kit provides and a little less than opening the 2.5" hole. What i like about these double barrels in theory is that you should be able to let er crank hot, and the chimney shouldn't get too hot that you have to throttle back.

I will install it tomorrow. It will be a round plate over the 2" hole on the bottom that you can rotate to open\close.

I wonder how much creosote you will get on tubes in upper barrel.? Smoke cools off it will leave deposits.? If it stays hot enough it shouldn't be an issue

I put fire bricks on the bottom. I wanted to keep the fire from being directly on the metal to avoid warping and the bricks will help to retain heat too.

The lower barrel gets about 750 degrees, the upper about 450 and the flue is 200-300. I thought about that too. I would have liked the barrels with removable lids so it could be cleaned.

A damper in the stove pipe will give you much more control on your fire ... If you can't slow it down on a breezy day you'll be loading it every thirty minutes.

There are two dampers. One in the pipes between the two barrels and one in the stove pipe out of the top barrel.

I have seen that too. My wife already thinks it looks too redneck. I can't imagine what she would say with random pieces of large metal welded to it

We had one in the shop I grew up in. Was a 275 gallon oil tank with a 55 gallon barrel kit like you have. Dad had a supply of free oak trailer flooring. Grandpa had one just like yours in his shop. Sadly both were removed when the insurance agents did their walk arounds. No other companies would accept them either

No issue. She said that if it were in the house there could be an issue but being in a dwelling extension was not a problem.

Nice job, I had the same stove but without the holes in the top stove. The heat was very efficient and worked well in the coldest weather. I stored a few older Chevy’s in the garage and became worried about the open flame and the possibility of igniting the gasoline fumes. I replace it with a electric unit. Nowhere near the heat or comfort. still wondering if it was a good move?

Very nice. Seems like you have an un-insulated shop as well. How big? Do you do anything to circulate the warm air or just let it radiate?
