My dream garage project:Interior paint advice wanted.

Building a dream garage/workshop and trying to decide which texture and paint/colors to use. (I’ve been planning and waiting 10 years to build this workshop so pretty excited to get to this stage)
Thinking as bright a white as possible and a light orange peel texture.
Exterior or Interior paint? Sheen? What not to use?
Any advice appreciated.

The more gloss you have in the paint, the more it will show imperfections in the wall. I'd stick with a matte finish or at most a semi-gloss. What kind of work will you be doing in there - automotive, woodworking, or? I suppose exterior paint would be more durable, but if you're not splashing water around or anything I don't think it would be necessary. As for color that's up to personal preference, but I would prefer something off-white; it will be less glaring and probably easier to keep it looking clean. The only thing is there are a zillion shades of off-white available so choosing one may take some time.

What are your walls? Drywall, OSB, other? That may determine what finish you go with, or how much final prep work before painting.

I have OSB and just painted with white Kilz, 2 coats. The original oil based, I can scrub on that to clean up a dirty spot. It is basically flat white. My ceiling is white ribbed metal panels, which are more gloss. I like having the light color to reflect light on ceiling and walls.

I used semi-gloss exterior paint. Dark gray on the bottom (concrete stem wall), med gray up to about 50"....and the rest light gray.

Gloss and semi-gloss are less likely to attract dust and dirt and is much easier to clean.

Ceiling is white.

I wouldn't worry too much about imperfections on the walls....because you are going to cover a lot of the walls with cabinets and shelves.

Gloss is way easier to clean dirty hand prints off.

I got to agree about a lot of it getting covered. This goes along with the recepts over 48". When its empty one envisions leaning sheets against the walls. No place after you move in, boxes, tools and shelves.

I used Glidden eggshell in an off white. Looks great and what doesn’t wipe off can be covered with a small roller.

Exterior paint every time.

Gloss is easier to keep clean. I don’t care if small imperfections in the surface are visible. For me it is all about reflecting as much light as possible.

I have to paint my attached garage. It has drywall. I am thinking using BEHR Gentle Rain, wall and ceilings. Its s light gray that we used in one of our rentals. Do you have any photos of your paint job? Thanks.

I used ceiling white on the ceiling and walls of my first garage thinking the brighter the better but It was too bright. Eye strain would set in after an hour or two. Ended up repainting the walls to tone it down some.

Semi-Gloss for sure...I wanted a wall that would wipe down easily if stuff got on it. I also just used one colour for the entire thing, ceiling included...basically a slightly grey toned white. Most of the wall space gets covered up in the end, so I wouldn't worry too much about imperfections and such.

I have bright white semigloss and orange peel texture high quality latex paint, and I very happy with it. As others will say the more glossy the sheen the more imperfections that will show. I have two areas. #1 behind the drill press I have had oil fling on the wall from the drill and stain the paint. #2 the welding/grinding area collects grinding dust, I live on the Texas coast so everything rusts so the small metal fragment that stick to the wall from grinding have little rust spots. I'm thinking of adding eather laminate countertop material or galvanized sheet metal for those areas. I'd stay away from oilbase paint. If all you do is woodworking you should be good to go. Behr, semi gloss, “Winter Wheat” on upper portion of walls with white metal ceiling panels. Barn siding on the lower 3’ of walls which is hardly seen as benches and stuff covers it.

I painted my garage the same colors that I painted the interior of my house (very light gray with darker gray accent walls), made logistics easier.

Standard interior semi-gloss latex paint is a lot more durable than people think it is. You just need to make sure it adheres to the surface well (use primer). If you want to add a stripe, do your research - its harder than you think to get a clean line.

I'm assuming you have drywall walls? Are you doing the drywall work yourself? Orange peel would be a good texture to use, quick and easy.

This is my garage....before it got 'stuffed'..........

Wall color is not too big of a deal....it won't be long before most of the walls are covered with **** anyway.

That's what I am using and it is turning out extremely well. Very impressed by the coverage and the strength of Duration. I use a friends business account to get a consistent discount, but they run a 40% off sale pretty regular.

Also an interesting alternative to painting a line is putting up a french cleat/ or even chair rail or a simple 1x3 or 1x4 trim board.

Way easier than trying to get a straight line on say, OSB
