Then you're misguided.
A tiny proportion of the people who visit most fora bothers to register. As it stands, any time someone puts a link to your forum* on another forum** they see only an error message. That's a wasted opportunity.

Really, we need to keep it that way until we can engineer some Spam controls. We have a huge amount of traffic and had a HUGE problem with people posting **** on our forums. We just upgraded the software and it takes time to work the bugs out. But, we'd rather lose sales than allow pornographers to use us to spread filth! The webguy thinks we will work it out in the next few weeks.
Ah, gotcha, sorry I was a bit brusque, I'd just been having that argument with a client who was under the impression that their server would catch cooties (or something) if they let the general public read their forum 
If you disable guest posts, then people would be able to read, but would have to register to post, rather than making the entire board private. That's the work of a moment, but there's also an IP board mod that makes first posts invisible, if they include any urls, and alerts your admins.
