I wanted to get an axe to carry when I go trail riding in my ATV's. I was browsing thru the axes that my knife wholesaler had on their website. I saw the estwing brand and had seen that name mentioned here as a premeir hammer maker so I ordered one of their axes. I am not disappointed in what I got. This is a very well made tool.

The made in USA is just a sticker. Maybe Snap-on can start putting stickers on the Dual 80 ratchets just for GJ. :D

I bet they are going to be backordered on the sheaths for awhile. I wonder what country will get to make them for Estwing now.

All their stuff is good, Ive got a tool box drawer full of estwing (ball peens/malls), some framing hammers as well several of the camping axes. I have known a couple people over the years that worked there, as well the guy who was the major share holder. The neat part, I didn't pay for any of them! All their stuff was made in Rockford, IL, but I'm not sure that all of it is still made there, they have grown significantly over the last 20 years. The stuff will rust though, so keep it oiled or protected.

I got a book around here somewhere showing the author's daughter shaving his beard off with an axe. You guessed it, it's a knife sharpening book. :D

thats awesome. I have a great respect for a sharp blade on a tool.

I have a weird obsession with machetes (i actually use them a lot), and I recently watched a you tube vid of a guy shaving with one. I have spent a lot of time trying to get one of mine that sharp since then.:pimpflash

Very nice, I was looking for one of those at the sale where I got all the hammers (trade you for a nice framing hammer). I got a Fiskars (import ****) about that size and I don't like it. I hope you've already done some chopping.

You will have that Hatchet forever. Ive been taking mine camping forever.

BTW that is a hatchet. They also make an AX with a longer handle as seen below. The hatchet is more than enough for anything ive ever needed it for.

i bought that same hatchet to help with cutting up some roots that were showing in my lawn. It was so dull, I know I could have sharpened it. But so dull out and brand new i returned it immediately.

Chad,I have had one of those for 15 plus years. Mine has a wood style handle. Been through hell and back and still works excellent. All my carpentry hammers and axes are Estwing.

Estwing makes the best hatchet /camp axe, IMO.

I got the leather handled one for Christmas a few years ago, A much better tool than the benchtop I had.

Estwing makes some nice stuff. I have a couple of their hammers, a rock pick, and a hatchet. I think the "wood handle" type you guys are referring to is actually a leather handle.

I got the same 16" handled Estwing Camper's axe for Christmas. My wife ordered it from Sears online.

I read all good things about them, and really liked the shape of the blade, and length of the handle. It's more than a hatchet, but less than an axe - this thing is solid!

The first thing I noticed is that it had a good grind on the edge shape, but before taken to the point where each side met to form a sharp cutting edge, they stopped and put a very high degree angle to make the edge - it was DULL. I took a flat file and worked the edge so that it met properly on the same angle of the factory grind, and i think I could almost shave with it if I polished it up a bit more. I finished it off with a little work from a med-fine stone, but it's far from polished. I'm anxious to give it a try once the snow melts a bit more.

Finnish import ****? I disagree. My Fiskars splitting axe is nice.

I have the Estwing hatchet with the leather handle and I love it.

I thought it was from China (I bough some Fiskar shears and they were from China and ****), it is from Finland and still a piece of junk, used to like their older stuff but haven't been happy with the stuff I bought more recently. Take a look at the blade, it's too soft, it has only been used on wood. I've used the Estwing one, now that's a choppin' machine.

Nice, I love my Estwing hammer. I prefer the wrapped leather though. I'm not even sure if they make an axe with that option. And about the Fiskar axe, my brother has it. Absolute junk.

Fair enough. The blade is softer and comes to a very fine edge which increases the damage. The Fiskars sharpener takes care of that in no time. I like the lighter weight which increases striking speed and splitting effectiveness. I also prefer the handle which is smooth all the way from end to end. However, the lack of "gripiness" on the end is somewhat of a safety concern to me.

To each his own; my Estwing hatchet is still a camping standby!

I have always liked the Estwing with the stacked leather grip! Nice looking axes and hatchets. My favorite axes/hatchets are Marbles (they have moved the manufacture overseas now, but still nice). The old US-made Marbles are the cats azz...

I am surprised to see so much hating on the Fiskars hatchet. I have been using one for a few years and I am pretty happy with it. I pretty much only use it to chop up small pieces of wood for kindling and I have a larger axe to break up the big stuff.
My next axe/hatchet will be a Estwing though. I have a few of their hammers that I really like. I have a 20oz straight claw leather wrapped handle on the way right now actually.

As a union iron worker/welder, I use an old Estwing rock hammer with the leather ring type handle similar to the post above for a chipping hammer. I reshape the pointed end when needed & the other end works good for a little persuasion. Sorry, slightly off topic, same brand though.
