Friction. When you tighten the clamp it wedges in the hole. But if you pull straight up when it's loose, it comes right out.

Slick. I wonder at what clearance the wedging action won't work. At .623 you've got a nice snug fit.

You can still clamp the **** out if it. I could tighten it enough to bend that tubing wall.

I think the holes were cut at ~0.628. There's probably about a 5 thou fit. I'd imagine the size isn't critical, you'd have to go pretty small before it would pull out. The tight clearance keeps the clamp vertical though.

I'm 32, so I hope I have quite a few years left to use it :) Plus, my wife and I have a little boy on the way.

I don't understand what secures the clamps in the holes.

the 5/8" stud is wedged in there once you tighten the clamp.

I don't know why anyone would want to drill and tap that many holes when a normal hole would do if your table is thick enough.

Finally had some time to drag the table out and pull the top to install the cross beams. I will be using these to pull the top flat.

Finally got the top bolted down and leveled out. It's basically 'finished' at this point, however, I still have some things I want to add. I'm planning on getting the CNC running first though because I plan on using it to build the last couple things. I plan on adding air, some clamp and grinder storage, painting it and possible a large drawer under the top.

Great build! I'm building one similar and was wondering if you have had any problems with all 4 casters touching the ground and if you though of leveling feet at all? I'm really struggling how to incorporate them yet keep a rock solid over-built table without having to bend down to the floor to level it out by turning an adjuster screw.

Nope. No issues with the casters. I was worried about that too and racked my brain to come up with some trick leveling system but still able to keep it mobile. In the end, I just decided to go with what works. Now that I have it usable, it stays put really well even without locking the casters. I like being able to just move it around. Just today, I used it to unload all the steel for my CNC table out of my truck. It makes a stout dolly :). I think if I had a big garage or shop I would have just put leveling feet. But since I have a tiny garage and too much ****...it has to adapt. I may cut up some brackets for levelers when I get the CNC running just for a fun project and to be able to level it out if I want.

The end of one story and a beginning of another. I sold my fab table the other day after getting what I felt was a more than reasonable offer. I have version 2.0 in the planning stage.

With the way the garage is set up and how I want to do things, the next table is going to be smaller, but expandable and modular. Similar to a Bluco or Siegmund table, but a different flavor. I want a smaller foot print for 90% of my work and to maximize space in my garage, but the ability to expand for larger projects like a gate.

Kazlx, looking forward to seeing what you come up with for your new table.

Out of curiosity what did ya sell version 1.0 for? and were ya planning on selling it or did someone see your bad *** welding table and just had to have it offering a big wad of cash for it?

I was contemplating building a different type of table...the slat type design instead of a solid top. I put the table up on CL for $1500 and had a guy come the next day ready to load it and we agreed on $1400. I had about $1000 in materials/labor costs in it (not including my labor).

I have been a little tight on space with my CNC plasma table taking up so much room and never quite had enough room to walk around the table. I sold my Deckel mill (which had a tiny table) and replaced with a regular Bridgeport, which needs more operating space. I was always squeezing or trying to move the fab table. The size was nice, but overall, I don't really need the size most of the time. If I had more space, it wouldn't be a big deal. Overall, it was a bunch of little things, along with the fact I can't leave well enough alone, but the driving factor was space, and it was a beast to maneuver for little adjustments. What sealed the deal was I had some ideas about what I wanted to build and found a table that someone had built that was very similar.

Here's the start of 2.0. Just need to figure out how I want to attach the two main beams and then design the framework.

I will be posting to this new thread as I make progress. Will be about two weeks until I get started. I leave on vacation tomorrow to ride some downhill mountain bikes in Whistler for 9 days.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=295081

As far as the table goes. Nailed down pricing on the plates. Will be using a 4'x8' 1" HRS plate. I will most likely have my supplier section into manageable pieces. Having specific sizes cut out was almost the cost of a whole sheet, with no drops to keep. Having them waterjet out was just stupid expensive.

There is a small chance I will be able to have a buddy machine them for me. He works at a machine shop with a table big enough to take the individual plates. If I can get a good price, I will have him knock them out. If not, I'll be putting in some nights on my Bridgeport.

Damn they go for that much!

I tempted to sell my little one but nah I don’t want to do all the work again so might as well just open up the holes to 3/4, round off the corners to a 2” radius and semi polish up the top.
