My Fight: Part Deux

I have spent the last two days reorganizing my garage. I am tired, sore, and feel like I inhaled a pound of dust, but I am at the point where I feel ok posting my progress.

Here is the prequel to this thread. It takes place a long time ago, in a life far, far away... I recently updated my original thread, but decided that a new one was in order since so much has changed.

The catalyst to reorganize my garage came on two fronts. The first is that I have a major vehicle project approaching, and I need to have things in order. Secondly, I recently decided to remove my 4'x8' dog kennel from the garage. My dog has mellowed over the last year, and spends most of his time inside with the family, sleeping in front of the fireplace, and really only stays the night in his kennel. Having a kennel taking up nearly 25% of my garage didn't make sense anymore, especially considering that he can sleep in a crate in the spare bedroom.

Here is where I started a couple of days ago.

Here is where I am at this morning. Please excuse the mess. I am still in the process of cleaning up, and getting things in their final places.

Looking at the door to the house. To the left I am going to build a platform to place the tool cabinets on to get them level and flush against the wall. Right now, they are about an inch too wide to both fit. The cabinet on the right is hitting the stair tread. This is not the final configuration, just the placement.

IMG00923-20130112-0530_zpsab0ad938.jpg

This is the opposite view. The bay on the right is where the kennel used to reside. The Dana 60 front axle will be installed by late spring, and the Sterling 10.5" will hopefully go in this summer. The garbage cans will go outside behind a fence. I am still trying to find a home for my cardboard. It is so handy at times, and other times a pain. I have a horse stall mat that came out of the kennel that I have to deal with as well. Man those things are heavy!:shocking:

IMG00924-20130112-0530_zps3b8823f0.jpg

The two large cabinets need to be reorganized. I need to get a small shed or storage box for the backyard. That way all the yard stuff can go outside. The small cabinet on the left will hold all my vehicle maintenance supplies. I will be rearranging the aluminum can and oil holders, as well as, moving the shop towel holder. The small cabinet on the right will hold all my vehicle cleaning supplies. The bench seat from my van will be sold or given away.

IMG00926-20130112-0530_zps8611e925.jpg

This side gave me the most grief. Who knew that suddenly gaining 25% more garage space would be so confusing? :headscrat My garage slopes to the doors slightly in the rear of the bays, then really drops off toward the front. I decided to remove the levelers on the rear of the 8' bench on the left, stick those feet on the stem wall, and then installed some large levelers on the front to deal with the slope. The vise came off the 8 foot bench and needs a new home. Everything is a mess here. I am also in the process of rebuilding a mountain bike, so I have parts everywhere. I am going to do a huge clean-up and remove all personal knick-knacks, signs and useless junk. I have realized that I am not a memorabilia kind of guy. The older I get, (41 now) the more I am perturbed by visual clutter.

IMG00925-20130112-0530_zps9addcb7d.jpg

My ultimate goal here is to get everything into a cabinet or overhead storage. Then I want to build a 48" x 36" assembly table on casters with leveling feet. This will reside in the quadrant with the workbench and tool chests. My rig will never see the inside of this garage, but I want the table to be mobile so my wife's Range Rover can come in for detailing.

I am perpetually remodeling my home, so that will be the main use of the garage, along with modding my rig.

Comments and suggestions appreciated!

Brad,

Nice transformation.

Can you tell me where you purchased the stainless shelves you used for spray cans etc above your bench?
I see you moved two of them to rearrange your cabinet.

BTW what type of dog do you have?

Thanks! The aluminum shelving is from Summit Racing and is used for trailers. It is WAY too expensive these days. I got it on clearance, but I would do it differently if I had a do over.

My dog is a German Shepherd.

I assume you are referring to the old cat door the previous owner installed? My dog couldn't even get his head through that.

no, i was joking about the size of the kennel :)
my basset hound loves the cat door, i think he wonders why all the other windows aren't at his level

Hi Brad,

You are making great progress on your garage and getting it organized to your requirements. Can certainly relate to your comment about "perpetually remodeling" the home and garage spaces. Looks like you are keeping busy and will get lots completed on the 4WD van you are building.

Best,

Ody.

Thanks Ody! I haven't had this much space in a long time, and to be honest, I don't know what to do with it all!

Another day, another revision. Here is what I worked on last night. I built a 2x4 base to get the tool cabinets level(ish). If this configuration works out for me, I may fab a metal base with leveling feet.

IMG00927-20130113-1208_zpscc35499e.jpg

Now I need to figure out what to do with the space to the left of the door to the house. It's 52" wide x 20" deep x 92" high under the over head storage. I have a spare 20 amp circuit that I was thinking about running over there. I pre-wired speaker cables to that area, so it would be a nice excuse to get better tunes in the garage. Right now, I am leaning toward putting a heavy duty cabinet there to hold all of my large power tools that usually take up valuable counter space.

Here's a few shots looking in from the garage doors.

I pulled the horse stall mat over to the workbench temporarily. It is just too heavy and awkward to move outside by myself.

Here is the space for which I need to come up with a solution. Right now, all of the items that are without a home are stuck back there. I also moved the garbage and recycle containers to the side of the house which prompted my wife to declare that I am now soley responsible for taking the garbage and recycling out.

Seems like a small price to pay for a good amount of extra space in the garage; less clutter, no smell, more floor space and besides, taking out the garbage is traditionally a job for 'the man of the house'! lol

whats up with that specialized on the wall?

It's a 2005 FSR XC Pro that I just got on CL. I am doing a rebuild on it, and it's currently waiting to go get powdercoated. I am gathering parts as money allows in hopes to have it ready by springtime. I have been without a mtn bike since mine got stolen many years ago. Both my wife and son have them already, so I wanted to get up and running so we can do family rides this summer.

Here is my temporary solution for the wall to the left of the door to the house. Just a cheap-o rack from HD with the WORST shelves I have ever encountered. Luckily, I had a piece of 3/4" ply leftover, or the chopsaws would have fallen right through.

I want to do something handy there, but I am feeling uncharacteristically uncreative lately. :dunno: At least for now, all this stuff is off the floor.

Overall shot... Sorry about the pic quality. There is this really wierd ball of bright light in the sky. Not sure what it is??? :headscrat

Cool. Bring $3500 and I'll throw in the Sterling for free. :lol_hitti

As far as the storage goes... I had an idea to do a built-in closet with shelves, but that would be too many doors along that back wall. I also have an idea to build a rolling assembly table with a lower shelf for the chop saws. It would be 48"x36", and I would keep it in that spot. I would roll it out when needed. A wall cabinet could go above it. But then what to do about the air compressor. Then I was thinking of selling it buying an upright model to go where the beer fridge is, but then what to do with the beer fridge? :willy_nil

Very cool, i wish i could afford a 2 year old Big hit and hit up some of the Ski resorts this summer... but I'll have to settle with BMX :rocker:

table for the chop saw with enough room for the compressor to nest under it. table on casters to move as needed. if you have enough space you could do a shelf 6" or so under the table top. then the cabinet and it's all good. the more stuff on wheels the better
