My first anvil

Hey guys,

Today I picked up my first anvil at an estate sale. It is a Vulcan 45 with what appears to be a factory stand. It was the reason I decided to check out the sale 45 minutes away so I stuck in the bidding a little longer than I probably should have... From what I gather here $2/lb is a little heavy for a vulcan?

It is in pretty good shape aside of some cuts in the picture, I paid $100. How did I do?

I also picked up this old military water pump for $10 just because the cart looked like it could be a good start for a welder cart - not sure what to do with it yet. Open to suggestions!

I wouldn't have thought twice about $100 for it, it's a nice score. The cuts are in the right place, that's the spot on the anvil where a chisel is intended to be used.

Having said that, Vulcans were a second-tier anvil. They are notorious for the top plate chipping off on the edges. Yours looks like the edges are in great shape.

Thanks guys, I feel a little better about the purchase now. I think I'm going to paint the anvil and use it as a stand for my remote controls or something - its the perfect height.

Still looking for ideas for the pump equipment - I did find the motor has a zz model which I believe places it in the 1940's time frame. I can't say I could ever imagine the need to use a pump like this - to pump. It seems to be original though so I feel bad thinking about just using the cart.

The cart is awesome, if you will actually use a welding cart that style, go ahead and try to sell the pump but if you can't think of a good use, sell it complete to recoup some anvil money. I'm pretty sure the stand under the anvil is not factory, it's cobbled together with what looks like a brake drum, threaded pipe and angle iron. Still cool though and fully functional. You did well.

Anvil looks to be in good shape.....except for the blood someone left on it!

The motor on the water pump reminds me of one we used to have on a wheat auger when I was young and helping dad fill the granaries. It was hard to start.....especially when I was young and had to stand on the tire to wind the rope on the starter. I would pull hard and "fall" of the tire to help pull the rope. Once it was started, it ran well and was pretty stout. Those were the days. I think ours was a Tecumseh.

Cart looks like it would be useful on a concrete floor. Bull stout...maybe just use it as a wagon when you need it.

Good score on the anvil.. I agree with nine4gmc that the stand is not factory. Someone did put some thought and effort into building it...

You did well with the anvil. I don't care who made the stand for it, it's still pretty cool and looks sturdy.

You guys are right, I took a much closer look and the stand is made from a brake drum. I'm excited to get the stand cleaned up and painted at least... I'm not sure if I want to coat the anvil itself or use it once in a while.

I just got an anvil as well. But it's gonna be a while before I can pick it up. It's too big to get into the bed of my truck.

Yes indeed you're due a . . . . YOU **** !!

Curious what all uses you might dream up for the cart . . . that is a real keeper and would be cool to have inter-changeable tops for different uses.
