My first broken snap on socket.

I was using my long 3/8 rat tightening a hub assembly and I went for the final crank the socket gave way and i damn near busted my hand. Will warranty it but i only had it about 4 years and i never even used it on a impact

It happens, I wouldn't worry about it per se. I broke a Snap On Torx socket on a brake caliper mounting bolt and I was surprised at that. Back in the day, a little bit of an act of Congress to get it replaced, but eventually it worked out.

My snap on guy is pretty good. He will warranty stuff regardless of age or if I bought it from someone else. It doesn't hurt I pay in crispy bills every time I see him

I've broken Mac, Matco, and Craftsman sockets like that; it happens. Can't say I've ever broken a Snap On, though.

Find the snap on guy, or call corporate, show them the broke socket and recieve a new socket. It's pretty easy.

Deep sockets are much more prone to break. Guessing I have broke 50 over the last ten years. Mostly all C-man, but I have broke a snap on one too.

I normally use a mid length chrome or the impact 13 but that day for some reason I just grabbed the deep. I haven't used those in a while

Ur fine man. This forum is to talk about tools and garage stuff. There isn't a single topic that hasn't been covered atleast twice on here. Sometimes people get worked up when they feel a topic isn't worthy of posting.

Anyways that's cool just get it warrantied. I myself haven't actually broken a snap on socket yet. I have broken a snap on wobble extension before and other things as well.

Probably contained an air bubble or speck of slag that made a cavity inside of the metal of the wall. Doesn't look like it had offcenter mouth unlike a socket I broke.
I wonder if NASA screens theirs with X ray or something to try to catch the problem before it happens?

I broke a snap on socket yesterday too. Mine was a 3/8 drive semi deep 1/4. usually its the 8mm sockets that always break on me

Are you talking about the tools that go to space? The EVA tools aren't steel. It gets too brittle at the low temperature extremes. But I believe they carry a few sets of normal sockets for inside use too. There have been writeups on them, and from what I've seen, they're off the truck stuff.

I find that sticking to short sockets in high-torque situations helps keep my sockets in one piece. If you have to use a deep, make sure you put pressure on it to keep firmly and squarely seated on the fastener. It also helps keep you from tearing yourself up, and we don't come with warranties.

Did an Escalade wheel hub/bearing and cracked the 15mm semi-deep with my FLL80 (last bolt). It made a loud bang but luckily nothing gave up. Still finished the job with it.

One of my friend uses the deep 8mm chrome on impact all the time, cracked it and still use it for two years before he finally got a driver to replace it.

They're not indestructible. Take a picture for memories, and send it back for warranty. Next time step up to a bigger drive size.

It seems some on here feel physical pain whenever they see or hear about anything Snap-on that fails or breaks for any reason.

Disclaimer: I have a couple of dozen Snap-on tools and a toolbox and I've never broken any of them, or any part of the toolbox.

I wonder where the broken part was in relation to the direction of the handle? I'm guessing the crack took some weird stress and the twist motion then compounded it to failure.

Never broke a SO but cracked and rounded out many others.

Welcome to the club. I bought bulk Zypher torx bits after destroying handfuls of the snap on gold bits, split snap-on sockets, blown up ratchets, etc. If you use anything enough, it will fail eventually, especially in a shop environment with high use.

13mm seems to have a high failure rate across all brands in 3/8 I have noticed.

14 mm. deep 3/8 drive Snap On broke on a hub bolt on my Subaru sedan. Same scenario, long handled ratchet & it split. Being as it's 30 years old, I don't feel right trying to get it warrantied.
